revolution question

Why did they add otsr in the first place on this great ride. Will they ever take them out?

Thats what Im wondering. I never thought about Revolution till I saw Roller Coaster the other night. When I saw it I said wow that looks like a cool ride. Then I saw a pic with, ugh, OTSR.

California State Law

Caloifornia State Law? Where did you hear this? Montezooma's Revenge has operated in California for 23 years now without OTSRs. It even turns you upside down one more time, and is of the same make. (Intamin/Schwarzkopf)

Mongoose, nothing personal, but that's bull$#!+. Thanks to Disney, California didn't even have a state law on amusement park rides until last January. Even today the details still haven't been fully worked out. Besides which, if it were a state thing, then explain Montezooma's Revenge at Knott's.

If it's some local regulation, then I want somebody to quote me 'chapter and verse.'

Sorry, but I can't state a chaper or verse, but I read somewhere that all roller coasters with inversions in LA County have to have OTSRs.

Well, that could make sense because Knott's is just over the orange county border.

Is Valencia in LA county? It's took me a while to drive there from LA when I was visiting.

It is because of the inshurence company!

Yes, I have heard it is an insurance issue. Think about it. If you are a business and can get your insurance premiums lower, wouldnt you do it? I know it sucks for the rider, but the park has to look out for its own interests as well.

The OTSR's on the Revolution a direct result of the accident at West Edmonton Mall. There was much said about the fact that the coaster lacked ostr's while other makes had them. The press (and the Canadian government) contended that if the ride had had ostr's that it was possible that some lives could have been saved. After that most insurance underwriters went ballistic and insisted that any ride with inversions have ostr's installed. A few somehow have escaped this fate, such as Greased Lightning at Astroworld. Now that Monte's down for an overhaul, could otsr's be in it's future?

The rumor I heard that OTSRs were added because of gang initiations required new members to hop rows while on the lift. Easy to do with just a lap bar. Hard to do with OTSRs.

Tim: Are you serious? I mean the validity of the statement aside, did someone else really tell you that? See this is why kids run and pick up a gun to settle problems. The kids are soft. Even gang initiations have become "sissified".

I suspect that Dutchman is right. That accident, which was not pretty, sealed the OTSR fate on most things Schwarzkopf (with a couple of exceptions, I believe).

1nomed, if that is the case, then please explain Montezooma's Revenge, Shock Wave, Tidal Wave, Scorpion, Doppel Looping, Lazer, Son of Beast, Sooperdooperlooper, and Texas Tornado (the one at Wonderland). Just to name a few. Heck, you could add Millennium Force to that list, but that's a different argument. You might also consider the Allan Herschell Looper, the Eyerly Rock-O-Plane, Loop-O-Plane, and Fly-O-Plane, the Huss Ranger, and the Larson Super Loops. Admittedly those six all have enclosed tubs, but then they also all *dangle* riders upside down for some period of time, unlike a looping roller coaster.

Try riding Sooperdooperlooper at Hersheypark in Hershey, PA. I would bet that if you even tried to wriggle out of the lapbars on that ride while it was in the loop that you would not go anywhere. Heck it is nearly impossible to put your hands up and keep em up in that loop.

Dave, you beat me too it! But your list makes me wonder. Just how many looping coasters don't have OTSRs? I know it's a lot. In addition to what you said I thought of , Mind bender (georgia), and Viper (georgia), Red Devil. There have to be at least 20. I personally think SOB's loop is one of the best out there, and a big part of it is that there is no shoulder restraint! I, unfortunatly, did not get to ride Revolution pre-OTSR and feel I missed out. I thought SooperDooperLooper was FUN!

Son of Beast was built in 2000 and has an inversion that is over a hundred feet tall but it doesn`t have OTSR`s!

Shockwave at SFOT is a double looper and it has no OSTR's
