Why shouldn't there be a loop on a woodie?

I've always wondered why some people say that there shouldn't have ever been a loop put on a wooden rollercoaster. To me it's just adding another element. There must be hundreds (that's purely speculation on that number) of woodies without a loop and only one with one. I think that leaves plenty of room for the purists.

By the way, for those who haven't ridden SOB, the loop isn't the focal point of the ride. It's here and gone, and probably the smoothest inversion I've ever been on. (That kinda rhymed.) Anyway, can anyone shed some light on this subject for me?

Well I think that people need a new element to have them venture out to some of these parks.. like PKI... I hate to admit that though. I think that it also opens the door for new and better types of rides. I for one can't waite until the next type of ride comes out. Like Stelth... I thought people were joking around with the "Flying" idea. I thought that is shouldn't be done because some will very easily fall out! So as I have heard Jeff say befor "Its all about the money baby!"

I think the whole idea of having a loop in a woodie is a good one. Face it people, is called technology. After all, you are sitting in front of a piece of technology right now, right? If something can be done these days, why not do it? I am glad to see designers pushing the limits of technology. MF pushes the limits for steel coasters, right? Besides, the loop is in the middle of the ride and there is only the one.

I only wish that the SOB's demonds will be excorsized soon. I can't wait to ride it.

How ironic that the most gimmicky part of the ride is also the smoothest, according to some who've been on it.

Go figure.

No, Chitown, actually the side supports are steel as is the framing of the loop, but the actual track is still wood. I guess it would have taken ALOT of lumber to support a 118 foot loop... would have looked pretty cool, though.

Yea it would have looked cool (all wood loop) but... they would have been still building the "Fricking" thing and it wouldn't be open until next year! not to say it won't open until then now! .... As you can see I am giving up on the whole SOB thing now... I have wanted to ride it since May 11, 1999. (The day PKI announced the building of SOB) but now I don't give a "Darn" when I ride it!

After seeing pictures of the loop, I'm glad technology was a major part of this. It looks so fragile and weak, but everyone says it's sturdy and smooth. It's another great element in a coaster.

BTW, I make major spelling mistakes on this thing and I now have a dictionary next to me, thanks to Jeff hammering us about mispelled words. The loop is hideous, gets a thumbs down from me. They needed some wood around it to at least give us the impression that it was made of wood.

Who cares what it looks like, what does it "feel" like is what matters. MF has one of the ugliest structures I have ever seen, it's still one hell of a coaster.

Im just wondering whats next. Will there be a corkscrew to come? I say leave the loops to the steel guys. I also think that wooden coasters could use some overbanked turns however.

I'm wondering what's next also, with much anticipation! I say try everything you can, I'm constantly delighted at the things coasters can do now. 300ft steel, wooden loop, flying coaster, 0-80mph in 2 seconds, wow keep it coming!

The loop is incredible. I agree with eastcoaster... Who cares what it looks like?

I think that some people think that a loop is a bad idea because many looping coasters have OSTRs, which isn't the best idea in the world on a woodie.

OSTRs? Overly Sickening Train Rides? ;) Just kidding. Perhaps OTSRs. As long as they don't try corkscrews, or anything funky, they're really not needed for a simple loop. The G's should be enough to keep people in their seats.

Yeah OTSR's would be just a complete abomination on a woodie. Could you imagine "Mean StreaK" with them. Call the local hospitals, we have a full scale emergency situation on our hands!!!
