If anyone is interested, the K'nex Screaming Serpent is on sale for $34.99 at Target.com PLUS there's free shipping. Don't go to the stores expecting to see this low price cause it's not happening in the stores.

Not sure how long this will last.

I bought two sets about a week ago from Target.com...I figured for that price, what the hell. Turned out to be pretty good, and alot bigger than I thought it was going to be.

What is the track like, fixed radius curves, flexible, etc? Can you build your layout own ala RCT, or are you limited to the two track shapes provided?

You can build whatever you want (provided you have enough supports & items). The track is just long strips of tubular rails you snap onto the track supports.

Damn, I thought you meant the new set, Rippin' Rocket. Then again that wasn't in your title.

Sheesh, why won't they deliver outside the States? I live in Aussie & would buy 2 or more sets if I could. Got 2 sets when I was in LA at the beginning of the year. That ain't enough to build a huge Megalooper.

How well does the model keep it's speed? The rails on the original K'nex rollercoastercouldn't go through a shuttle loop (forwards and back) after a 5 foot drop with a small loop.

OSFN8, It keeps it's speed okay, but it does peter-out pretty quickly, especially if your track isn't perfectly smooth. Any little spot that isn't smooth will slow it down even more. Also, loops and other elements will make take a lot of energy away as well. This one is soooo much better than the first version...I had that one too and I now use it's parts for my SS sets.

On the coaster I have now, I have a 48" high lift, the 2nd hill is 36" and it just barely makes it with a five or six car train, the third hill is about 27", & so on.

Loops take a lot out of it. I wish they had a booster type thing so in mid-ride you can speed it back up.

Just a little thought here... I actually got this idea off of some other thread on this site, so this isnt an original idea... but go out and buy a few of those six flags cool coasters. Their track and the cars have less friction so you get a better ride out of them. They also come with a power launcher. You can use the Knex for supports for these. Someone made a really cool TTD model like that.

As far as keeping speed, if you add some WD40 to the wheels it will make your train run faster. During my first custom design with Screamin Serpent my coaster kept valleying in the cobra roll I made, but after a little WD40 was added to the wheels it flew through the element.
