Kennywood!

As long as you follow those yellow arrows, you'll be just fine getting to the park. As I said in another post, Kennywood manages to cram a lot of rides into a small footprint. They have a ton of flat rides, and a great freefall tower. Exterminator is great, but be prepared for extremely long waits, and don't miss it as it's "hidden" in Lost Kennywood past The Whip. Noah's Ark probably doesn't meet any current OSHA standards (at least the old part), but it too is worth the long waits. I have yet to try out the whitewater rapids ride, but it looks like fun also.

Wow....I've never heard of that ride, Moosh. I was almost positive that the ride wasn't called Auto Racer. I was a little confused by that, and also the handslapping part. Since the Racer is known for that on it's turns, aswell. Any pics of this ride?

DS - I'm sorry the hand-slapping part confused you. You can do that on their coaster, Racer, too. As for the car ride, I'm sure there are pics of Auto Racer our there [it might be called Auto Skooter...I'm not entirely positive]...I don't have any posted, so I'm no help. Perhaps Kennywood's or GregLeg's website?

Anyway it's a powered car ride that used to have little bunny hops [they were removed some time ago]. Imagine any "Tin Lizzy" style car ride, but about 3x the speed. The layout is such that you are able to slap hands of other riders at various points. If you're evil, like me and my friends are, you'll use the speed of the car to your advantage when preparing to slap hands. I've never been in so much pain and laughing at the same time -- well, not since that night with Nasai, but that's a whole different story ;)

Anyway the only caveat is that due to the powered third rail the ride closes in even a slight rain and needs to be wiped dry to reopen, so if it looks like it might drizzle get Auto Race out of the way.

The ride is called Auto Race (formerly Auto Ride) and is loads of fun.
Don't forget to ride the Swing Around and Raging Rapids.

Yes they do have have the deep fried oreo's. They cost $1.00 for one cookie. I was gonna try it but I didn't want to pay $1.00 for just one. Next time I will.

I don't have any pictures of Auto Race up at present, but I'll go through my archives and see what I have. I don't remember any, but I find it hard to believe I haven't taken any over the years ;)

I love all the coasters and the various whirling dervishes, but I also really love log flumes and rafting rides. I've ridden them all over the country. And I think KW's log flume and rafting runs are the best anywhere. I only wish KW had built them plus the Pittsburgh Plunge next to each other so people could change into swimwear, ride all three over and over, then dry off and change back into street clothes for the other rides. But that's a minor point. KW had the best flume before, but since the most recent renovation, it's definitely the best.

I can't think of one ride in the park that i wouldn't recomend going on... it is that good. And because of it's relative small size it is quite possible to do everything in one visit.

I found that Forbes thing offensive. Furthermore just about anything i like about Pitt lies within the city itself (Kennywood being the one exception). On the other hand i will conceed that Pittsburg isn't the best place for nightlife, but that is only part of what makes a place a good place to live.

I would also like to add that i only recomended those neighborhoods if he "had some time". ;) Perhaps it was a bit vague, but any one of those areas could be visited in four hours or so by the greenest of Pitt visitors. And far more interesting as a visitor then the Waterfront or any other mall which i can find just about anywhere in the country.

Absolutely agreed, both on the Forbes thing being offensive (and full of it!), and on how the listed neighborhoods are far more interesting than the Waterfront...

Who owns/opened Kennywood?

Everytime I hear that name.. Kennywood.. I think of Kenny Rogers or Kenny Loggins. Don't know why, I just do!

The Kenny family opened the park some time ago and it started as a railroad station. You can buy videos called Kennywood Memories 1&2 that tell you all about Kennywood one of the greatest traditional parks i have been to. Its not the thrill rides that make it special but the feeling you get walking through the classic tunnel. Its one of the greatest feelings if your a pittsburgher!

Also hit the Flying Carpet...not to many of those rides anymore. steelphantom- actually, Kennywood started as a picnic grove leased by the Monongehala (sp?) Railway Company, a trolley company, from the Kenny family.

Here's a tip for Exterminator: If you get to the park at opening, head for Phantom's Revenge first. Upon exiting PR, head to Exterminator and enjoy very short lines for about twenty minutes or so. I've done this the last two years, and had great success, sometimes logging three or four walk-ons before the crowds catch up to me.

Three or four consecutive rides on Exterminator would ruin my whole day...:(. One ride was terrific, though...;)

And the *real reason* everyone (non-enthusuiasts) thinks of Kenny Rogers when they hear Kennywood......Dollywood!

Yeah, only the really super special enthoosies know it actually is Kenny Rogers who owns it. He opened it back in 1908 I think.. 3 years before releasing the hit single "The Gambler".
