Ghostrider gets a tunnel/roof

Check this out. I stumbled across these pictures of Ghostrider receiving a roof/tunnel on the first drop. I guess the local's don't appreciate the screaming from the riders.

I'm guessing the local enthusiasts don't appreciate this roof. What is it about SoCal and screaming? First Cal Screamin' and DCA's S&S towers, now Ghostrider. What's next? Totally enclosing Supreme Scream?

Maybe a local can help here. Is there some sort of local noise ordinances in SoCal pertaining to amusement rides?

Yeah, I took those pictures. The original plan was to fully enclose the first drop. A GR ride op told me that mid-project, they decided that the "roof" would somehow stop the noise enough. I think the fully enclosed tunnel would have been MUCH better than the ugly, half-assed looking tin roof. A full tunnel could have gone with the "goldmine" theme that it already has. Oh well, at least they are not changing the actual ride.

There has also been alot of buzz about this on RRC recently. I am very glad I got to ride the coaster before that ugly roof was put on. Was the noise really that big a problem? I thought the cars on the street were louder than the ride.

I dunno Soggy, That roof reminds me of the one on The Beast before the second lift hill. I like it because you get a good sense of speed when you fly-by it.

HIDEOUS!!!!! I'm so disappointed. It's not like they're running the ride at 3AM.

Wild One: You're right, for some reason, it seems to work well on The Beast. Something about this thing on GR just looks wrong on the first drop. As long as the ride remaind brake-less, I remain a happy camper.

I honestly think this is just step one. Don't be surprised if the neighbors continue to complain until the entire first drop is enclosed CS style. The famous third drop will be next, although i wouldn't mind that at all . ;)

The third drop practically IS enclosed, which is good because thats where all the screaming is anyways.

This just looks so odd, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Unlike some other coasters, this is not a ride that relies on the first drop to make the ride great, although the drop will continue to be as air filled in the back as it was before the roof.

Maybe this will be very good for the ride experience? Like a continuous headchopper during the whole drop? Who knows...

i heard they are just retracking and getting the roof because they are theaming it to look like ghost town. They told me it would just be better never a word because of the noise. and those things on maliboomer are not for noise, its so people dont drop coins or spit off the ride

There are noise ordinances in effect for Knotts. It determines when fireworks can be used, and the trains can't blow their whistles after a certain hour in the evenings (I think it's 8 or 9 PM). It wouldn't surprise me if some busybodies went around the perimeter of the park with a DB meter and took readings. Jack is going to have fun.

Today I went on Ghostrider with the roof. It actually makes the first drop a little more exciting. It does make it seem more fast. However, it also makes the ride look ugly. Oh well, at least the ride is still as amazing as ever.

I was at Knotts last year when it was deserted during the off season. Supreme Scream was a walk-on. I got talking to the ride-op and he told me that they spent considerable time and money to quiet the noise Supreme Scream generates. (This was done right after construction if I remember right. Some locals complained.) It was by no means quiet, but quieter than all the other S&S towwers I've been around. I know CP's Power Tower's air hissing can be heard a long ways away from it.

This isn't the norm is it? GR has been without a tunnel for ages and now this. Just because that other park down the road does, doesnt mean they have to as well. Or do they?
How long before they install those notorious Windshields like Maliboomer on Supreme Scream.

Guests are complaining that a Roof has been built

all right thank god ghostrider is open today. im there today. and it wont have a long wait, cause everyone will be at california adventure (I went yesturday it was horriable)

Talk about an eyesore. The tunnel really ruins the profile of Ghostrider. And from who are they trying to muffle the screams? The only thing near the coaster is the hotel.
And DCA really wasnt very crowded yesterday, only about 10k.
