I used to live a few blocks from the Cleveland Zoo. The Rainforest is indeed one of the most unique zoo attractions I've been in. Of course it's hot and humid... it is supposed to simulate a rain forest.
The thing that is most cool about it is the mix of weird plants and animals you aren't used to seeing. It's certainly not something I go to every year, but it's still very cool.
The zoo in general has undergone many changes over the last twenty years. It once had a spectacular aquarium that was destroyed in a fire. Monkey Island was one of the most unique features of its kind.
The layout is odd, but keep in mind that this is an urban zoo, only a few miles from downtown. It never had the benefit of long-range planning. Thank God for the trams that carry you about, especially to the area where the cat and primate building is up the hill!
The Africa area was a field for a very long time, but now serves as a "natural" habitat. The wolf exhibit is fairly new.
Overall, it's a pretty good facility for being owned by the local park district. I haven't been to a zoo yet that offered more variety, though I did like Portland's lush vegetation around the attractions.
