12 coasters at SFGAM?

this is not an attempt at starting a debate over what is considered a coaster and what is not, but my question is, SFGAM's website says they have 12 coasters, is this because they include Giant Drop?

I think they count AE as 2. Technicaly we will have 12 coasters in 2003, it just that one will be in pieces in the Employee Parking lt :-)

I have asked many people about this. Yes, it is because they count Giant Drop as a coaster. I don't know why. I guess it has wheels and so they count it. It's weird though because other parks don't count drop rides as coasters (i.e. power tower at cp)

No they don't, they count American Eagle as two coasters. Giant Drop isn't counted. It's SFGAm, not SFGAd after all. ;)

Actually, no, the count American Eagle as two coasters, with two different sides and two slightly different layouts. I cannot see how they could possibly count Giant Drop as a coaster, if they counted that a coaster, you'd think they'd count the observation tower a coaster too.

Well technically SFGAM hasnt announced their new coaster, so if the count says 12 on their website, they have to be counting GD. Even with eagle as 2, thats only 11 without S:UF.

My guess is they didn't take Shockwave off that tally, since the park isn't open and when it DOES open it will in fact have 12 coasters available to ride. So yeah, they're correct no matter how you look at it.

Is that standard marketing/PR practice to count racing or dueling coasters as 2?

RagingBullet I think there just being lazy because they know that next year SM:UF will be there and they dont want to lose customers for saying they have 11 during the off season but during the season they have 12. I know there not counting Giant Drop.

Apparently it changes from park to park. Six Flags Magic Mountain doesn't count Colossus as two coasters, Paramount's Kings Island doesn't count Racer as two coasters, and Cedar Point doesn't count Gemini as two coasters. Some parks consider racing/dueling coasters as two different coasters, and some parks don't.

I believe that PKi was counting Racer as two different coasters for the span of a year or two a few years back. I could be wrong about that though.

Well, I know that SFKK counts their dueling coaster, Twisted Twins, as 2 coasters unless they too are counting their drop ride as a coaster. I can kind of see that counting as two though because the layouts are hardly similar.

We have been down this road plenty of times before. For marketing purposes, they count the American Eagle as 2 coasters. They have never counted Giant Drop as a coaster.

Does it really matter? They arent breaking the record for most coasters in a park so its really not an issue.

They count AE as two coasters cause the layouts are actually slightly different. Coasters that are mirrors or moebius (sp.?) aren't usually counted as two, I don't think...

Yes, it does matter!!! The number of coasters a park has is used in advertising and to give a incorrect number is lying and false advertising!!!To me their should be some industry standard of how they are going to count coasters like AE/Racer etc. IMHO they should count as one coaster and not two.

Technically they arent lying because AE has 2 separate tracks so by saying 2 coasters they are well within reach of stating this.

If you are seriously bothered by this, I really feel sorry for you. But, its probably just another way of ripping on SF which you are very good at doing.

If Six Flags paid for one coaster when they bought american eagle, then it is counted as one coaster, but they paid for 2 roller coasters and that gives them every right to count the ride as two coasters instead of one.They are not mirror images of eachother either, they are only rides right up to the turnaround, where tehy turn in the same direction it is no longer a mirror. If it was a mirror image blue would have to turn right instead of left. After the turn around the rides weave in and out of eachother at differnt time as the other. Does this really matter? No it doesn't. but this is in no way false advertising or lying. If you go out today and you buy 2 identicle tvs I mean the exact same tv. Not even a little bit differnt, like AE red and blue are a little bit different, do you now have 1 TV because they are both identcle, or do you ahve 2 tvs?

AE certainly can count as two....even moreso when one side runs backwards. But a different layout qualifies it as two in MY book (which is the only *official* one I have). I only got to ride the backwards side, do I count it as a half-credit, lol....
