Five years... wow, that's like 15 years at least in Internet time.
Five years ago the Internet was still considered by many to be a novelty of fad (of course, we all knew better than that). At that time, World of Coasters was the only well-trafficked coaster site, and even then I suspect the domain name had a lot to do with that.
Now, the landscape has totally changed. There are hundreds of coaster sites in our database, and we only accept maybe one out of every four submitted! There is a lot out there, and it's hard to keep track. It's even harder to stand out.
The site's popularity is spiraling up and beyond anything I imagined, and if I knew the formula, I'd quit my day job and be a consultant (which would then give me the right to just make stuff up and get paid for it). At some point, I would expect that it will level off, but who knows? There's always the possibility that someone will build something better.
My goals for the site are really just to provide a place for our community to gather online, and bring all of the universe together in one low-noise place. That's why we run news the way we do... it's contributed. I'll say it again and again, the site will only thrive if the membership makes it thrive.
My financial goals are just to break even (though that's becoming difficult). I'd like to quit my job and just do this all day, but so far I haven't seen any reliable business model that will keep food on the table. That's exactly the reason I don't see how AmusementPark.com or the ThrillRide/WoC thing will ever float. Where's the revenue?
As long as I've got the time and money, I'll continue to operate the site and evaluate new technology and features as the Net develops.
Welcome to Episode II!
