Metal Detectors, the other stereotype.
I have seen in the past, not so much on this site, but on others, that metal detectors are a sign of bad element frequenting the park. This is =obviously not true. SFGAm has the detectors along with SFMM and Kennywood. You have to understand that when you have a park in one of the 3 biggest cities in the country, (Chicago, Los Angelos, New York) that certain precautions are going to be takin. Some people look at it as an inconvenience while others like myself look at it as a safety measure. I dont mind the extra minutes waiting in line to get in if people arent carrying weapons in the park.
My point here is to people that visit these parks for the first time with detectors, dont take it personally and dont automatically view the surrounding area as a bad element. Its designed for your protection.

Right on, Chitown.
I've NEVER felt unsafe at Kennywood. The metal detectors are a precaution. They cause a SLIGHT inconvenience entering the park, but nothing major.
I haven't been there in a while, but I believe SFGAdv has them, as well. I know there's other parks I've been to that had them, but I'm blanking. Anyone know of any?

SFA has one. I noticed something weird once.
A fight broke out between two gangs in line for SROS. Then about a half-hour later, when my ride was over I noticed a few cops running some metal detecors through the grass. For the looks of this I concluded that one of the fighters through a weapon and it landed in the grass. I was just thinking that the security gaurds must have not done their jobs at the front gate.

SFA isn't exactly known for their security in the last few years. Last year's $300,000 robbery aside, my experience was that their gate staff is way too chill about letting people through. The difference from SFA to Kennywood or SFGAm is night and day.

Since this is on SFA bashing right now I might as well add my 2 cents.
Last year we visited on a very busy day, the 4th of July. We went thru the metal detectors and set them off. We started to walk toward the securty guard to do the usual bag and wand thing. They simply told us we were ok and we could go.
I just find if funny a park right outside of D.C. (a city with one of the higest murder rates in the country) would let you in without the propper search. I guess we looked like honest people. Then again by looking at Ted Bundy would you think he would have killed all those women?

The robbery did not occur inside the park gate. it was in a building near the employee parking lot. As for punk's July Fourth incident. If they checked every single person who set off the metal detectors every time, the line at the gate would be over an hour long. Not excusing the guards conduct, but there is only so much they can do. I was there one time when they were checking every bag, and the front gate line took over a hour.:(

Its all in the operation. Parks like Kennywood and Cedar Point are 'incorporated', as they have their own state credited police force, complete with holding cells. This the difference. Giving kids guns is not the answer, it is having full time trained staff. Both of those parks have several.
Most delinquents know a real security force and a force led by 20 yr. olds. is not a deterrent. Metal detectors help, but it is all preventive. I actually feel safer going into some parks than I do getting on planes. There are some yo yos out there working.

As I've said before, if your park doesn't have metal detectors then do they really care about your safety? Gangs and hoodlums aren't the only person carrying guns these days. Just ask anyone who's been the victim of an office or school shooting. As for SFA, things have improved by far since the name change. Don't get me wrong there are still days that I wonder who let the hoodlums out, but for the most part the crowds have become much better.
I carry a concealed weapon(gun) on me except when I go into a park or a school. Before you jump down my neck about having one i can show you my stab wounds from when i was visiting my local mall only(coasterpunks favorite town reading pa) and looked at a local kid the wrong way. I believe that every park should have metal detector's and yes CP has there own police force but that won't do you NO good if someone has already stabbed you or god forbid shot you. Iv'e heard a rumor that disney has concealed metal detector's any thruth to that. Just my 2cents worth

I was stabbed (3 times 1 arm back and chest took 3 months to recover) way before I ever started carrying a gun I have a state permit from New York(not a easy thing to get). I was in the 75th airborne ranger's for 5 years when I got out i took and passed the State Police school in pa but decided not to be come a police officer after my girfriend did not want me to so i bought my own company. So don't be scared its only the one's who don't tell you they have a gun and do have one that should sacre you.

Wrong-o there buddy. ....I'm so tempted to go into more detail, but this is after all a roller coaster site, so I suppose there are more appropriate forums for a concealed gun debate. Any suggestions? (Although... you say 'its only the ones who don't tell you they have a gun and do...' -- unless you tell literally every person you see that you have a gun on you, aren't you one of the people who has a (concealed) gun that I should be scared of?)

No what I ment was the one's with concealed weapons who don't have a permit and the gov does not know of them. I have a permit which i can carry my gun concealed if you have a problem with that take it up with NY state. Its legal here to carry a gun with a PERMIT it is ilegal to have a gun on you with no permit those are who you should be sacared of. I served this great country just for the very reason we have going here freedom to discuss this. By the way what have you done for this country excluding complaining about a Permit i own from the goverment.

Common sense says he shouldn't have to worry about people he carries heat. I mean it IS constitutional right? I can't understand how one frowns on someone that legally carries a weapon, but doesn't have a problem if one has messes around with illegal paraphernalia (I'm not saying that's anyone on this site).
The man has served and defended his country and legally carries a weapon around. And people have a problem with this? Sorry to get on my political soapbox but please back off supermandl. I realize this isn't the best place to talk about this, and if anyone would like to talk in length on this subject I'd be more then happy to speak with them.
