A reasonable question, What was the First "Hyperco

I was involved in a nice debate in a previous thread and was possibly about to learn something new until it was closed. I do not want to get into that though, time to back off such silliness.

I wish to ask a reasonable question unrelated to the topic of the previous thread, Which was the first "hypercoaster"?

In my life up to this point I have always heard that the Magnum was first. That it sent the industry into a frenzy and is partly responsible for many of the great rides today. Now, I have used that Powerful Search Box and found some things. It seems the phrase "hypercoaster" referred to a non-looping steel track coaster with a height over 200 feet.

That thread was probably closed for one reason: To nip an argument in the bud. Unless everybody really watches their step, another fight is going to ensue.

So, until I see this thread's going in the right direction, I'm gonna leave it alone...

I always beleived it was Magnum, until I saw some photos of Bandit online, and learned that it was built before Magnum. I think that Bandit was the first coaster to break 200 feet (without inversions too) but, Arrow first used the term "hypercoaster" to describe Maggie, so Magnum is the first hypercoaster, but not the first coaster to break 200 feet without inversions.

The last thread that was closed in an apparent "argument." I would have called it an incisive debate. I don't mind getting slapped in the face, as long as the slapper read's my entire post. If I am wrong, then I will gladly accept a correction.

I thought that Bandit was only 175 feet or something like that. Anyway, I've always heard that is was Magnum. Does anyony know where to find pics of Bandit?

The book White Knuckle Ride states:
First drop (which my friend who has ridden confirms that it's the biggest drop): 167ft
The description goes on to state that due to hilly terrain, it achieves an elevation difference of 256 feet.
Is it a hyper coaster? That's not for me to decide. You can decide yourself.

On a side note: I'm going Japan soon, and I'm going to hit all the big parks. I will gladly post pictures if anyone is interested.

Oh yeah.. I checked out the stats under the picture and the only stat that could represent height says 78 meters. That's roughly 255 feet which, as Peabody said, is due to hills. As for me, I don't think it's should be considered a hyper. If it was, coasters like Steel Phantom would probably have officially been a lot taller.

You didnt state that in your previous thread. You said that all hypers are imitators of Magnum. You know as well as anyone else that, that is not true. Just because a coaster can hit the 200ft mark, that all coasters going over 200ft is an imitator. Its ridiculous and not worth noting. Yes , it was the first coaster to reach 200ft, but that does not make it a prototype of anything. Height of a lift hill does not make a first of its kind. Magnum is special to alot of people due to its height but it wont please everyone. The same goes for the first inverted. People will not think that Batman:TR will be the god of inverteds. Think before you make your case.

Is it just me or is 200 only a number? Magnum may be 200 feet, but does that mean a coaster smaller can not be better? It's even been noted several times before that the 135'(I think) The Beast is much better than it's 210' or so "son". Or even GhostRider or Shivering Timbers better than SOB. I agree. And I don't want another looping woodie. You lose the airtime with the restraints.

And Joe E.,not to start anything at all, but if what you say is true, Magnum is an imitator of a wooden out-and-back. Maybe even The Beast?

Well, we're keeping it clean, so I'll jump in.

My personal definition of hypercoaster is a drop of over 200'. I mean, isn't that what really counts? (After I posted, I realized... By my definition, that would make Magnum not a hypercoaster. Well, I've decided I'm going to use the same logic as the "Does Millennium Force have inversions" question: No, MF doesn't have inversions, but the overbanks do turn you upside down. Take that. ;))
