Flashback vs. Crystal Beach Cyclone

Goliath rocks

After looking at some pictures of the legendary Crystal Beach Cyclone, I couldn't help but wonder if, when they designed Flashback, Intamin was trying to duplicate that infamous first drop on the Cyclone. Anyone have an opinion on this?

I was also wondering nobody has ever built a clone of this legend when they have built SO MANY clones of the Coney Island Cyclone which doesn't look nearly as exciting. Any thoughts?

Was this the coaster that had a nurse waiting for people at the end of the ride?

I've never seen the wildcat. You may have to forgive my ignorance in posting this topic; I've only been to sfmm.

Man, I need to get out more!!!

I haven't been to Hershey, either. I don't think I've ever seen a full tilt clone of it, though. People take just a little from it, that's all that's needed. You can see it on Discovery (Travel) every couple of weeks while they do summer teaser months.

I just went over to rcdb and looked at the Wildcat mentioned earlier, and it looks like they just copied the first drop, sortof. I would love to ride a "full tilt" clone of that thing, myself, considering it is supposedly the most intense coaster ever (and looks it).

There are many twisting 180 degree (or near to 180 deg) first drops. Both Roars and Belmont Giant Dipper. Trick track has had somewhat of a reappearance. But, NOTHING comes close to the CB Cyclone's intensity. I think GCI could come up with a VERY good 21st century copy of the CB Cyclone, without the broken ribs. If I won the Lotto, I would call up GCI with the idea!!

"Hello, GCI."
"Yes, I have a few Million dollars to burn, could you build me a coaster, could you rebuild the Crystal Beach Cyclone for me?"

I think the reason you haven't seen a clone of it is because the ride was to nasty. Crystal Beach tore it down due to low ridership (to rough, no one wanted to ride) and the fact that it was tearing itself apart. So I highly doubdt there will ever be an exact clone. There may be a modified clone someday. Actually, I think the Aeroplane Coaster at Ryeland looked like a much more intense and impressive ride. I think it was torn down for the same reasons as the CBC though.

I think the cyclone looked more extreme, but the Aeroplane is right up there with it.

The Crystal Beach Cyclone was closed on September 2, 1946, and just 2 weeks later it was dismantled. A new coaster was erected, using wood and steel from the Cyclone. The new ride was called the Crystal Beach Comet. When Crystal Beach closed in 1989, the Crystal Beach Comet was dismantled, and stored. A few years later it was auctioned off, and The Great Escape, in Lake George, NY was the high bidder. In 1994 The Comet was constructed, and is now one of the #1 wooden coasters in the world. So in away, the Crystal Beach Cyclone is still with us. If you ever get the chance to ride the Comet, do so. Its an amazing coaster with some amazing airtime. If anyone wants pictures of the comet, email me. I have a bunch.

AAAHHHH! The Comet a great design by Schmeck. Builder of two of my favorite coasters Phoenix (1947)and Comet (1948). Similar layouts but I think the Phoenix has more air but the Comet is faster in the turns.
While riding the Comet I just thought of it's old state. If you look close on some of the steel sturcture you can see bolt holes and extra pieces. Could they be leftovers from the CB Cyclone?
My ribs hurt just thinking about it.

From what I've read, it seems that most of the injuries on the CBC were due to the quick laterals and the fact that there were no seat dividers and it had a simple lap bar - so violent turns slammed you into the person next to you and into the side of the car.

I wonder if one could safely build an exact clone of the CBC, but only use an improved restraint system to prevent rib injuries.

Of course, there weren't too many injuries (though still at a level not-acceptable) so it couldn't have been TOO dangerous, but perhaps a bit rough for many riders.

Actually, the Ryeland Aeroplane Coaster had a reputation for being intense, but NOT abusive. No known injuries were ever reported from this ride. This one could actually be rebuilt today and not be too intense for the GP. I wish somebody would build it!
