Here are some interesting estimates that I got from my most recent health insurance news letter.
Estimated number of injuries of various products that resulted in emergency room visits last year:
(this is only a partial listing)
Stairs, ramps, landings, floors 1,975,074
Basketball 631,186
Bicycles & Accessories 597,284
Playground Equipment 248,372
Exercise, exercise equipment 215,831
Glass doors, windows, panels 185,071
Ladders, stools 174,631
Carpets, rugs 117,588
Lawn mowers 76,421
Television sets & stands 44,750
Glass bottles & jars 44,449
Cleaning agents 33,823
Amusement attractions (including rides) 19,211
Beach, picnic, camping equipment 16,949
Air conditioners 13,211
My point, for all of those trying to regulate amusement park rides more, is that television sets (not to mention many other products) caused more injuries last year that all amusement devices put together. Rides don't even amount to the entire 19,211 injuries last year and look how many things are in front of them. Floors and stairs, windows, lawn mowers. I guess that amusement rides aren't as dangerous as some people want to make them out as.
