Jumbo Jet at CP

"Jumbo Jet" was a coaster at Cedar Point for only five years. I only got to ride it once... I was finally tall enough in its final year. I was so disappointed to get there the next year and see it was gone. I remember really loving it.

Does anyone have any history or stories about why it was so short-lived? I'm suddenly very curious. It seemed to be quite popular. Were there safety issues or something? Maintenance issues?

I'd love to know more about the history of this ride.

I can't help you with the ride's history but should you really want to go ride CP's old Jumbo Jet you can, its at Selva Magica [Magic Jungle] in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Jumbo Jet at CP was not the only one built. Check on www.RCDB.com for additional locations. Who knows maybe you'll find one near you.

......but not likely. I just glanced at the list, but it looks like the only two operating are in Mexico (or Spain or Central/South America, I didn't check the locations).

But I agree, the layout looks much better than Wildcat.

I was pretty excited to try the one a Coney Island only to find it SBNO.

There were some workers there who told us that they expected to have it open before summer was over. I guess that proves you can't believe everything you're told. There was a group of guys doing something to the coaster, whether they were truly repairing it or whatever, I don't know. They claimed to be repairing it even though the whole area was overgrown with brush and pretty run down (even for Coney Island).

Looks like a crazy ride and hopefully I get a shot at one eventually.

Dorney Park visits in 2002: 17

RCDB says that CP's Jumbo Jet went to a park in Russia in 2001! I thought it went from one park in Mexico to another.

Oh, can someone tell RCDB that Divertido opened in 1997? My email isn't working right now. I saw the commercial for it when it opened.

I rode the Jumbo Jet at Coney Island in April of this year. Was it down for repair before or after this date?

There is also a Jumbo Jet in Ocean City, NJ which is operational. It's actually a City Jet, but still very similar.

As a matter of fact, I was reading one of my coaster books (The American Roller Coaster) and it says that the Jumbo Jet @ Cedar Point (well, the Jumbo Jet in general but they were referring to Cedar Point) is a portable ride and that it has been to many different parks since it was dismantled from Cedar Point. Also, does anybody know what part of the park it was at or have like a park map from one of the years that it was there?

The Jumbo Jet was one of a group of Schwarztkopf built rides installed at the Point in the early 1970s. It was located next to the Space Spiral near the front of the park, on the Lake Erie side. If I recall properly, it lasted about eight years before being removed. What kind of a ride was it?Let me put it this way. When we were limbering it up in the weeks before the opening date, we'd pick the fittest looking peons that were there and put them on , for the day. We couldn't get volunteers for this one like the CCMR or the Blue Streak. We had to draft them. Yes, it could be that brutal.It also drove maintenance crazy as well.Between the trains stalling on the lift spiral, and a automatic block control that frequently had a mind of it's own (with frightening results) I heard that no one shead any tears when it left.

It is just one of those mystery coasters. I was too short when it was operating, then down when I was tall enough, then just gone. Anyone know of any video footage of one of these bad boys in action???

Looks similar to the Whizzer but if I remember correctly the Whizzer is a dif. generation of a Jumbo Jet.

I am pretty sure I was tall enough to ride CP's Jumbo Jet in it's final year or two (I was a tall kid) but too scared to ride :( Yeah, I was a wimp as a kid : )

I rode Jumbo Jet as a kid, and I can tell you that it almost kept me from getting back on a coaster. I believe the height limit was 50" or 52". Something unusal for the times. The cars had no restraints and it relied heavily upon positive Gs to keep you in your seat. And positive Gs it had. The ride basically made a sharp, highly banked turn at high speed, then turned around and did it again. I was certain I would fall out.

Obviously, I didn't. I heard it left because it was so rough and cost too much to maintain. Pretty much the consensus here.

I believe the height requirement was 48" the first year it operated (at CP) and 60"(!) the remaining years. Alas, never made it to 60" before it was removed. But it sure was fun to look at.

have you ever been to CP?! wildcat and WT are on opposite sides of the park, and i find it hard to belive a ride spanned the whole park

djhush, the Wildcat used to be where Oceana/WT is now, in that area. It was moved to its current location a long time ago. It used to be right by the water.

I wonder if the ride didn't have capacity issues as well. Only twelve people per car, and what little I remember is that the lines were LONG. I do remember getting bruised on it, but I also remember it being quite fun.

Yeah, Wildcat was moved from that front corner of the park to where it is now for the 1979 season.
