First Steel Coaster

I know that Matterhorn at DL was the first to use steel tubular track, but what was the first coaster to ever use steel track?

Some Little Dipper steel kiddie coasters were around before the Matterhorn.

I know that Tree Top Racers was built in Australia before the Matterhorn and then was moved to Adventure City in 1999.

Actually there was some German portables built during the 1920's that toured the European fair circuit that used angle iron track.

You guys are close, but you gotta think back farther. Steeplechase, at Coney Island's Steeplechase Park, was a steel tracked coaster. I think it's the first, but I'm not absolutely sure.

I'm willing to bet that angle-iron coasters go back quite a ways. I think the Loop-the-Loop used steel track back in the day.

Well in Rob Coker's book he has a picture of a coaster in France that was built before the Matterhorn that had tubular steel track. If you guys have the book it's on page 20.

The coaster in Robert's book was steel but the rails weren't tubular. It looks like Intamin Triangle track but it was upside down. One set of wheels were on the top and two were on the bottom.

If you're talking modern-day, it would maybe be the Sky Streak (1973) out & back at Bob-Lo Island. A design and I believe, a gift from Japan.

Here are a few that opened before Matterhorn (keep in mind these are operating, I have know idea about defunct coasters):

High Speed Thrill Coaster (Knoebels) and Wild Chipmunk (Lakeside) (1955)

Roller Coaster at Hanayashiki Amusement Park (1953)

Little Dipper Memphis Kiddie Park (1952)
