Looking for info on a "Tempest" ride

I remember back in the late 80's and early 90's going to travelling carnivals all the time (we had no amusement park where I grew up) One ride that I remember from them was called the Tempest. It was similiar to a scrambler, but had 2 rotating arms with two round gondolas attached to each arm. It gave the same ride movement and feeling of a scrambler, but the arms were slightly tilted and the round gondolas held (guessing)10-12 people each.

I have been searching to find the manufaturer of this ride or if any are still functioning. I have so far not found anything. Does anyone remember this ride or have any information on it? Thanks in advance for whatever you can provide.

No info 'fraid, but have seen rides called tempest on site above, but they weren't the same ride I remember... I seem to recall the seats being like schoolchairs to...ring bells?

I know what your talking about. I have only seen one in my entire life, sometime back in the ninties. Some models have Umbrellas on top of the round Barrels.

They must be very rare.

The Tempest that used to run at Americana is now at Cincinnati's Coney Island. There are still several in carnivals.

I believe they were built by Watkins... but I may be mistaken.

Conneaut Lake also has one now. It is indeed Watkins (not sure what else they have done).

The only other ride I can think of by Watkins was the Rampage, a bizarre take on the Chance SkyWheel. I believe the Tempest also came in a model called the Hustler, which was themed to resemble balls used on a pool table.

Built by Grover Watkins, and I think High-Lite Rides now offers a version. There is a stand-up version called the Scat...basically the tubs are mini Round-Up tubs...but I've seen a few Tempest rides. Coney Island (OH) has one, Nolan Amusements has one, and yes, used ones are floating around all the time.

I'm sure I have a photo around here someplace...

This site is where lots of showfolk, fans, and modelers interested in carnival rides congregate. A little slow in postback times since it is the middle of fair season, but I'm 100% sure you'll find the answer to your question there.

The Tempest at Coney Island holds seven people per car for a total of 28 people per ride. The Tempest at Coney has had many problems this year (chains breaking and parts breaking) but it hasn`t seen much down time lately. I`ve operated Coney`s Tempest many times but never rode it. I guess I`ve seen too many people walk off about ready to have a protien spill.
