Painting Costs

What is the average cost when painting roller coasters? I think I heard somewhere that it can range from $50,000 to $100,000. Anyonw know the answer?

Well, when I volunteered at Conneaut to help paint the Blue Streak, Betty, the preservation director, told us at dinner that we were saving the park over $50,000. And they sure showed us their appreciation for our helping hand, the free food was awesome and they gave us free lodging also. As if it wasn't enough just to let us paint a roller coaster. = )

I'm sure cost varies depending on the size of coaster you are talking about.

Of all parks I've ever been to, the park which always seems to keep a fresh coat of paint on everything is definitely BGW.

Even non-enthusiasts notice when a coaster is in need of a paint job.

Seems like if it were that cheap, CP would have done Mantis and Magnum by now! I agree that BGW's rides always look real good. Keep in mind though that the rides down south do not take the pounding in the winter that the ones up north do.

The only coaster I've ever seen that was in desperate need of a paint job is...wait the only two coasters I've see are American Eagle at SFGAm and The Bat at PCW

The Paramount Parks don't have a habbit of painting there coasters. Rebel Yell at PKD and Thunder Road at Carowinds both need paint jobs.

Haha......You see, American Eagle's problem is that it looks great from far away, like in there commercials.....But man, that coaster could use about a billion gallons of white paint.

i think some rides look better with old rusting paint, it makes them look unsafe, making it more scary, lol

Don't forget about the Racer at PKI. It is in desperate need of paint

rolling thunder is in need of a serios paint job and a totol overhal ether that or recking ball. i just cant see how in the past few years sfgadv could afford sevral miltimillion dollar rollercoaster but be so cheap as to let one of their former classics rott away to a pile of unridable lumber

Is this a proven fact? Seems like the sun down south would be worse on paint than than anything up north.

True, the sun down south is harsher, but down south they do not have the temperature extremes that northern parks have...

To repaint the Orient Express at WOF cost above 50,000. The job had been bid out in 1998 but was put off due to budget constraints. Once the coaster had it's derailment "accident" it allowed them to 1) replace the track that caused the issue and 2) repaint the entire thing. It looks really good now...let's see how long it stays that way. They have also gotten into the habit of painting Timberwolfs "hand" rails around the track white. I really really hope that this is not a nod to a future intention of painting the whole thing white. That would be one ugly coaster.

Helping Conneaut was indeed a rewarding experience for both the park and volunteers. Unfortunately they still have a ways to go, and that includes areas of the coaster higher than the insurance allowed. I guess the contractors closed up shop! Painting isn't cheap, and certainly takes a lot longer when you have 5 million boards to paint as opposed to only 6,000 pieces of steel. :)

It can be expensive. You need a primer and multiple coats. Knotts Berry Farm painted 4 or 5 rides this year: Perilous Plunge, Montezummas revenge, sky cabin, and the scrambler they have.

The new Montazoomas Revenge job looks like crap. Totally wrong colors.

About Paramount Parks, I think somebody should start a thread like "Does Paramount neglect there Parks" because yes they do.

Nope. It was painted in the patriotic colors approximately 18 years ago.....
