Volcano

I have never been on this ride because when I went to PKD it was being built. What is it like ? Can somebody explain it to me.

I never rode it either but watching all of the coaster specials on tv,I think it looks absolutely cool.
Who would complain about a LIM?
I went on S:UE at SFO and was a little disappointed that it wasn't a longer ride so I think Volcano should be worth the ride!

Volcano literally blew me away! Ive heard others who don't like it but I loved it. The 2 LIM blasts are awesome and that first sweeping turn is incredible. Then the train seems to float through those smooth barrel rolls up high in the air.

Awesome! Short, but if it was any longer the capacity would be in the dumper. The dual launch is intense, and it's Intamin baby-butt smooth. Great ride!

A whole lot of coasters do rolls at very low levels. Volcano is one of the only coasetrs that do its rolls about 140 feet off the ground. It just brings the fright level up a few notches! On top of that, Volcano goes through these rolls fairly slowly. It really threatens to dump your loose articles. Going back to the beginning, there are the LIM launches. Unlike the majority of LIM launched rides, Volcano doesn't just let loose in the station. It starts off at a crawl. You then go around a turn to the left. The delicious anticipation comes in waiting for the train to get aligned again. Once it's all the way around the curve, the LIMs kick in! LIMs are so much cooler on inverts than normal sit downs in my opinion. The only problem with it, as Jeff said, is it's pretty short. Even so, it's very worth your wait.

Also, can anybody else think of coasters that do rolls really high? I'm sure there must be some out there but I can't seem to think of any...

I enjoyed Volcano very much, and loved the sensation of a rolling launch, as I can time when I launch on a traditional LIM coaster by looking at the ride op at the controls. The ride is a prototype, and it shows. The launches, and the vertical launch are awesome but, after that, there is little to no elevation change. The zero-G rolls are impressive, however. All in all, its a great ride, and worth being in PKD's launched lineup.

True, but the one right over the surface of the Volcano is very cool.

Doesn't Volcano finish with a large drop like 130 ft to get to the srtation?

Not quite 130, PKD says it's an 80ft drop back into the mountain. I waited one hour for Volcano back in 1999 and rode in the front row and it was DEFINITELY worth the wait! Wow, that is one of the only rides to have such a lasting impression on me after only one ride. It's short but it packs so much action into it. The rolls are so slow that you literally fall out into the harness! It's great! Going vertical through the mountain has to be ridden to be believed. One of my all time favorite coaster moments.

Good point, Jeff. That always scares me more than any headchopper tunnel. If you don't pull your feet up on that part, I applaud thee!

Isn't the Superman-UE at SFO considered that "roll" going up the first incline?..you do that twist which I think is a roll..I think they should hold you there a little longer and go to the very top..

Good point... I'm not sure if it is technically a roll or not (I mean, you really don't go upside down) but it IS a totally different experience. I haven't been on SUE but those spikes do look like a pretty harrowing ordeal.

I haven't ridden it yet darn it! When i went to VA to visit in June, it was being 'serviced'. Looks very original and sounds like people enjoy it. Too bad i'm a loser who picks the wrong days to visit parks (also went to BGW when Alpengeist was down)

Yo i live in Va. Volcano is fun, you can get like 15 min waits now during weekdays when the park was open. Those barrel rolls are sic. I was going to about to go to seventh grade when the ride opened. I was short back then. The Rolls hard me scared big time, cause my sholder were hitting the harness all the way through. True like Jeff said. Footchoppers are way more scarier. I always pull my feet up going through the barrel rolls. Check this I fell back on Volcano this summer. As most of you know it has rollbacks from time to time. Cause the second launch does not always go off. Me and my friend were about to exit the vertical part and come out the top. We stopped upside down for 2 seconds then freaking fell back going full freaking speed. As we went around that big turn backwards. I yelled we gonna die and started praying. But as always the first lim section slows you down cause they are magnets. We ten had to exit the train via ladders over a 20 foot pit hehehe. Well trust me when you are suddenly falling in reverse on a rollercoaster. You think something bad is about to happen. You know the green hulk on house on haunted hill, and how it jumped track. I thoughy that was gonna happen as we went around curve cause it was extremly rough. Peace out
