Shivering Timbers Hige supports

What is with the huge support struucture on Shivering timbers? Does it have something to do with earthquake regulations?Look Here

I doubt earthquake regulations, since it's in Michigan. Probably has to do with climate and weather conditions (such as extreme wind). Who knows.

Since this is CCI highest coaster up to date i guess it needed more woods to hold it up.

Actually, I thinik the extra wood works sort of like a shock absorber and it helps mantain speed. Anyone who saw Ghostrider on Top Ten Coasters and Extreme Rides 2002 knows what I'm talking about.

CCI uses specific structural designs based on the park's space, topography and finances. The taller out and backs tend to utilize the flanked supports while the twisters make use of one-sided batter (angled) braces. Note that Timbers uses the standard batters on the outside of the helix. Had this been higher up, they would have them inside, attached to verticals (like on Legend). The steel structured coasters are usually flanked on one side since they are stronger, and also withstand more forces higher up (helices for example). These cost a bit more too! :) It's interesting to compare Timbers' structure to that of American eagle's. Different companies, different approaches.

The changes of direction in a Twister help to support the track against lateral loads. On a straight out and back like ST you need more bracing to stiffen the structure against wind loads.

This is why Thomas Jefferson built his famous serpetine walls at the University of Virginia. By snakingthe walls around he could build them with less brick than if he had made them straight.

All I know is, that the head chopper's it produces makes for a great ride. It has everything. This is from 24 hours after the experience.
