Very good points Coaster God, and thanks for the agreement Jeff and Natalie. I'm glad most people actually see that safety is non-negotiable when it comes to amusement parks. The more people who realize this, the better off we'll all be, I think.

And I'm gonna say it again: When those of you who are currently childless have your own, watch them grow year after year after year, and then realize the unmitigated joy that they, too, are a coaster freak like you, then and only then are you going to appreciate the "half-inch" deal. Noone falls out if they're a half-inch short.
For you "safety-mavens": I guarantee you that, even when your "little person" exceeds the height requirement, you're gonna be nervous as spit! Mark these words. You will check their harness over and over, and you will (hopefully) teach them to check it even after the ride-op does, and still you're going to be a wreck!
Once again for you hardliners: remeber your hard line about the "half-inch" when your speedometer is a "half-inch over.... Bet it happens everyday. And you already know the safety of that.
And, for the statement regarding Bukweet taking the responsibility for the action, guess what? Bukweet does take it. No passing the buck. Sorry about that, whoever is the "bud."
And for those of you with the truest of "sage advice": The "stretching rack" and "neck-craning," etc., iz paying dividends! Little coaster-freak now proudly stands 54 and one-half inches tall.
Kan anybody guess what she's asking for? :)

Just another nugget: As I didn't think to mention this in the original post, I wanted to clarify it for some of you who are obviously hardworking and conscientious park employees.
For 2 summers, I went through this with "little-freak." And I want the park-ops to know this in particular: She has been taught since the very beginning that people are doing their jobs in accordance with the rules.
They are not mean or nasty or anything else. They are doing what they are supposed to do for everyone's safety, period. As I told her, "when it's your turn, it's your turn. No questions."
And this is how "little-freak" is raised. We don't run around and try to "scam" everybody. But when she got close, she hadda give it a go. This is nature; you did it, too. And through the numerous rejections and numerous tears, she never had a bad thing to say (or feeling) about the attendants. I refuse to teach it that way (although, frighteningly, I hear it taught that way alot).
Just wanted you to know.

So far, Ghostrider has made the only good point. Everyone else just repeats "It's da rule, yo!" othing more... No reasons why it's the rule, other than the usual "It's not safe!" reply... Also, he makes a great point that the height restrictions are there for the bastards that are sue-happy. If we didn't have the ********** who sue over everything, such as "I banged my head against a cement wall and got a concussion, so I'll sue the owner of the wall!" Plus, the U.S. legal system awards chronic stupidity... It's not a matter of safety that height limits exist, it's a matter of idiocy.

Yes, Everdred, I believe we'd have to sue the contractor, as that cement wuz obviously mixed to a standard that wuz "too hard" for my skull. ;)

If she had a great smile, attitude, whatever, then that, IMO, is acceptable for praise. But when you post almost soley about her letting your "too short" child on a coaster, then I don't think she did such a great job. That's my take on it, your mileage may (and will) vary.

It's not like I think you're a bad person or anything, in fact, I think quite the opposite. You explained in an earlier post that you raised your girl by telling her that it's not the ride ops fault she can't ride, they're just doing their job. I commend that, and wish more parents raised their kids as you do.
And yes, you can bet your bottom dollar I do speed when I'm driving. My job isn't catching speeders, however. My job involves the height checking of people. Maybe if I wasn't ever an op I'd feel differently (I doubt it), who knows. But I do my job to the best of my abilities, enforcing safety policies. And I think you appreciate that, to which I say thank you.

My daughter is a coaster nut and had to wait until this past summer to finally be able to ride Magnum at CP...yes she was less than an inch short the end of 99 but NO she did not ride...I not sure who was more disappointed,her or me.(lol). Her first Magnum ride was a VERY PROUD moment for us to share and enjoy.

Yes, I have a very extensive background and knowledge of amusement parks but I don't tell them how to run the parks or what guidelines to set. Just as I don't want the amusement park experts coming to my office and setting the guidelines and policies.

I just want to agree with Legendary and AirtimeSROS. Short kids don't get to ride. And sitting on the coaster anyway won't get you anywhere either. It will not be dispatched. And its not good to bend the height stick over the OP's head or to grab them by the throat (all happened at Six Flags NE this summer).Is it any wonder OPs are not smiling all the time? Also all of Six Flags NE international summer staff are at university therefore cannot be that stupid.
Geez, I knew SFNE had a rough crowd but I didn't know they were THAT rough. *might rethink applying for the supervisor position she was going to apply for there*
Oh, and the way we handle not having kids sit on the train and delay operations at CP is by having someone check height at a crowd control position or at entrance ALL the time. That way the short kids don't even get UP to the platform to cause disturbances (or should I say for their PARENTS to cause disturbances, cause we all know that it's their fault).

I think everyone makes a good point here. There are no exact black and whites here, we just do the best we can. How do you explain the fact that twice my daughter was measured for Medusa, barely made it, then rejected the third time. Which ride op was right? The line never changed, just their opinion of where she stood.

Exact same thing happened to me when I was younger on Shockwave at SFGAm. I rode the thing three times in a row, then went back for a fourth, and was told I was too short. Sucks, but that's the way it is I guess. I just sucked it up and went on my merry way.

And no, actually "in my day" when I first became tall enough to actually get a taste of rollercoasters (besides the Jackrabbit at KW which used to be an "or accompanied by" ride, not sure if it still is...wow did I ride that OVER AND OVER again), sometime in the eighties, we measured me every off-season until I was 48" and never even made an attempt to get me on until I made it at home. Trust me, I distinctly remember. (Yes, my mother is a coaster freak too lol) And B&M with their 54" height requirements didn't exist yet. By the time the first B&M appeared near me at any park I frequented, I was 13 years old and tall enough already. So I really don't know exactly what I would have done. Oh, and I have a question just for clarification, bukweet are you male or female?

LOL, bukweet, I think maybe I could have worded differently. I know I was tall enough to ride Shockwave, as I had ridden Batman the Ride (height checked and approved) and Iron Wolf earlier in the day, both 54" height requirements. I was height checked by (I THINK) a different op each time on Shockwave, then the fourth time, another op who just got up there said I was too short. LOL, and the whole time I'm thinkin' "Man, she sure is pushing down on my head hard with that card." I'm sure that I was tall enough, just close, but for whatever reason, that particular op chose to say I wasn't tall enough. I wish another op who measured me before would have told her that I had ridden and already been height checked. Oh well, I lived. :)
