Wow, has a train on a steel coaster ever derailed before, I always thought it was next to impossible for the wheels to slip off the rail unless they were mechanically taken off.

Several steel coasters have in one way or another "derailed" before. Strangely, all of them I can think of are Arrow coasters.

Although technically not a Derail, Vortex at PKI had a wheel shatter about 10 years ago. Also King Cobra had a rear car wheel problem in which 6 people complained of back problems.

I believe also the Incident on Orient Express a couple years ago was due to a wheel problem.

Americana (Now called The great americana amusement park at Lesourdsville Lake) is opening in 2002. Indivdual visits are very improtant to the parks survival.

Anyone have any better picks of the one on Mindbender? I've seen em but not for a long time.

The biggest problem with all of the articles on the site that bigkirby referenced: no sources. No way to tell if the stories came from reputable sources (such as PR at Buff. Bills or a newspaper article) or if it came from the guy at the Dippin' Dots cart.

The Rides911 site? Those are usually newspaper articles, and Jared can identify the sources; I'm not sure why he doesn't usually indicate the sources on the page.

Read the tidbit, people. Desperado did NOT derail. ONE of the wheels on the second car of the train broke, causing the train to make an abrupt stop at a BRAKING POINT. This is far from being "DERAILED".

Well, I hope it is open when I go to Vegas on May 10th-12th. I'll be there for a Basketball Coaches Clinic, and was planning on driving down and riding Desperado on Sunday when I have some down time. Hopefully it will be running.......

I don't think this is technically called 'derailing'. When the wheel came off the train's brakes locked, causing it to stop abrubtly, which would help PREVENT a larger accident such as derailing.

If it "came to an abrupt stop" I wonder if that means it was a guide wheel or road wheel and that the loss of said wheel caused sufficient misalignment for the brake fin to miss the caliper channel.

Mere idle speculation, of course...
