horizontal footers?

are horizontal footers possible, or not?? imagine a coaster running along side a cliff with the footers in the cliff wall, would that be possible, or do footers have to be vertical?

I can't find a pic of it, but Great Bear has something similar to what you are talking about near the very end, as it goes through that flat spin over the creek. Anybody got a pic of what I'm talking about?
