My wife, two friends and I set out to put our annual passes to some good use last weekend. Stayed at a Hampton Inn near the park (the only kind we'll stay in anymore for the most part) so we could get an early start.
The park wasn't very busy on either day and we decided to do Gwazi first just in case it got longer lines later. As the first time I have ridden this since it's opening, I was prepared to give it a second chance. I hadn't liked it before (rode Tiger side), but after riding Lion side I really liked it. Still not the best of the woodens I've ridden, but pretty good. Definitely more air-time on Lion. Laterals on Tiger almost threw me outta the train! Rode 3 times.
Now I have to move on to the major complaint of the day, carry on items on Gwazi. I have a camera bag that is only big enough to hold a small 35mm camera (non-professional). It has a shoulder strap that I usually wear on a ride like Chewbacca's chain (pagent style) so that it won't fall off at all. Or I'll actually attatch it to my belt. I've never had a problem with this on any ride at any park EXCEPT Gwazi! Even Montu operators never gave me grief. I attached it to my belt and went on the ride twice before the ride attendant at the front noticed me (the 3rd time past her). She wouldn't allow me to go without putting the case/bag (it's like a belt pouch) in a locker.
Now, if they had lockers like Universal does at IOA (60-75 minutes free, then you pay) I'd have no problem. But they want to charge you 50 cents every time you go on a ride just to store something. Isn't that like paying the admission, then paying per ride? Especially when they sell drink bottles and such for you to walk around the park with. Well, I asked to see their lead/manager to plead my case.
He came out and was nice enough, but really didn't have a worthy argument. Well, it is a safety issue. Maybe YOUR camera will not fly off, but you never know about John Q. Gwazi-rider.
Charging for the lockers is another issue. The "cubbies" at SFMW, PGA, many other smaller parks that are always available work fine. I have never had anything stolen.
In 1998 when Riddler's Revenge opened, they had the perfect solution. On a 3 train operation, there were 3 sets of closet doors in the station. As one train loaded, one of the sets of closet doors were opened by an operator, allowing cameras, purses, sippers etc. to be placed inside. The other two remained closed, as those 2 trains are somewhere on the circut. As each train arrived, the appropriate set of doors were opened. ***Presto!*** I guess this proved to be too labor intensive and zero ROI. Now they have the locker rental thing, sounds like the one you described at BGT, BOOOOO!!

Accually when I rode RR in July they had the locker rental area there. But I had a back pack on and there was lockers there for rent. But after going on B:TR and Colosus with no problems at all just wearing it backwards does the trick. So I kept it and what do ya know there are free cubbys at the station!! Wow what a rip off!

Maybe it's my tolerance for the ride. I love it, I just come off all dizzy and such afterwards. Usually it's due to the G's, but it's weird because I know I've ridden other rides with more than Kumba. Or at least seemingly more intense. It's gotten a lot rougher since it's early days. But then again, that tends to happen on any ride.
As for the cubbies, Gwazi doesn't even give you that option. I'd use them if they had them. I'll probably just get a "fanny pack" like my wife has, that way they won't give me a problem. I figure the only reason they won't allow the camera on (even in a bag) is in case someone tries to take a picture from the lift hill. :-)
Now that I can see being a problem. Also Coasterr, I can't believe they made him take off his pager. That's just insane! And you know, if you try to put it in your pocket in front of them they get all bent out of shape too. The ride ops on Gwazi are just plain anal!
