2. It uses a chain lift mechanism, like a coaster.
3. It has 'runner' wheels, which bear the brunt of the weight. There are some side-guide wheels to stabilize the vehicle on certain models.
The originals worked a hell of a lot better than the ones today. The trains would cook on the wood surface when it heated up.
