Portable Rides

Do you know those fairs that come along every spring and summer?
I've been to about 4 in my lifetime but the best one has to be the Westchester County Fair. This could be a all year amusement park with all the rides it had. Some of my favorites are the Drop of Fear, 185 foot plunge Intamin Drop style ride. I also enjoy the double loop, the largest portable roller coaster in North America! I do not know the exact measurments but this thing is big for a portable ride and has two inversions. There was another roller coaster that I thought to be a big old wild mouse. I also enjoyed a fun log flume bigger then ones at most parks and a portable Top Spin. Besides from the rides there are elephant rides, a petting zoo, go karts, and ostrich burgers ummm, well there not the most tasteful burgers I ever had and I am not sure they are really from a ostrich but they a unique taste to them. There are many rides I did not mention like the starship 2000, and a swinging chairs type ride along with a couple haunted houses.

I think you went to a fair with rides from Conklin Shows. The Double Loop is a Schwartkopf built coaster that is the same as the Laser at Dorney Park. The Top Spin is a Zamperela Windshear, which is similar, it just does more acrobatics. There is a larger park mount dubbed the 'Storm' at Morey's Piers. Conklin carries more rides than most mid sized parks.

I think the same fair comes down here to Florida every January.Isnt the roller coaster called Dooppel Looping or something like that.A decent ride for a fair.

There's a roller coaster at my fair that the lift goes straight up, then spirals down and goes over some small bunny hops.

We have a pretty good fair near us It's the biggest in Pennsylvania. The fairgrounds cover around 200 and some acers. Check out my day in the Trip Report section.

It is entirely possible that that burger was actually ostrich. Ostrich farming has become quite lucrative. I never tried it in burger form but I thought the ostrich meat I had was quite tasty.

Some notes on that Conklin show...

I went to the CNE this season, where the ride package was similar. The coasters were most likely a Schwarzkopf Doppel Looping and a Schwarzkopf Wildkatz, an older version of the Wildcat as seen at Cedar Point. The drop tower is from Moser Rides, and the Top Spin is a Soriani & Moser Super Loop-On-Top ride, similar but not identical to the Soriani & Moser Wind Shear.

It is correct to refer to the Wind Shear as a Zamperla ride, as Zamperla now owns it, but the ride was originally built by Soriani & Moser before that company sold to Zamperla about a year and a half ago.

When I visited the Florida State Fair in Tampa in '96 it was an independent midway, and Conklin brought two coasters...the Doppel Looping and a Galaxi. I'm guessing that fair still has an indy midway.

The only fairs I have been to were by "Wade Shows," and they seemed quite dissapointing (asside from a turbo-drop 100ft or so).

I forgot the name of Doppel Looping. If you go to the Dade Co. Youth Fair before Easter in Miami, it is ride heaven. Conklin is the main carrier, but they bring in other rides from Wade and Cumberland Valley. There is about 4 coasters, a log flume, 2 giant wheels, over 10 fun houses/dark rides, and all the newest flat rides. The list could on and on. I am not a carnival kind of guy, but this is one show not to miss if you are in the area. It actually takes about 2 days to go through, if you include the exhibits, games, foods, etc., etc., .....

Man my local fair stinks. I wish some of those companies would come to Georgia every once and a while.

Here, In Quebec, we have 2 fair company. Beauce Carnaval and Amusements Spectaculaires. Beauce Carnaval got a ferris wheel, Chance Inverter, Scrambler, Zipper and a couple of others.

Amusement Spectaculaires got a brand new Swinging ship, 2 Sartori Crazy Surf, Kamikaze.

Nothing really impressive and no big coasters, but good for a quick thrill.

The portable coasters are extremley labor intensive. Some can require in excess of a week to set up, while a great many of the new spectaculars require a few hours to a day or so to set up. It makes sense that only the really big dates warrent their appearance.
