First "wood" colored woodie

During the same perusal in which I noticed the now idendified "double" wheel in Sydney and related musings about the Grizzly clones etc, I noticed pix of the Mighty Canadian Min Buster in...where else? Canada. And my point? It's wood colored....It was built in 1981. Was it the first wood coaster not to be painted white?

The PNE Coaster in Vancouver,BC has never been painted other than the handrails on the catwalks.those are currently painted a teal colour.I believe this coasters' wood has been treated with creosote,much like a railroad trestle.This coaster was built in 1958.

If the CBC was wood colored, then it must have been painted. I'm almost 100% positive that it had a steel structure.

The San Antonio Rocket/Knoebels Phoenix was first built in 1947 and was never painted.

Most of , if not all of the coasters at Euclid Beach Park were not painted. The idea was that paint can hide faults, as well as trap water inside creating more problems. This practice dated back from the 1920's until the park closed in 1969.

Wow, what a slow day at work today...anyway, it is generally considered good practice when dealing with treated lumber to wait a while before painting.  It allows the additional moisture from the treatment process to come out of the wood...once it's had a year, painting will help keep the wood in better condition (minor difference IMO).  Wide temperature fluctuations cause more damage than rain, or even bright sun...but I like the wood color WAY better...

Ooops! Shows you how much I (don't) know. I knew the Phoenix was wood colored, but I wasn't sure if the Rocket had been painted or not.

Dutchman, how were the coasters at Euclid Beach???

Janfrederick, I'm sorry to say that I didn't make it to EBP before it closed, so I can't give you a first hand account. There are plenty of people out there who have, however. Do we have any Euclid Beach Nuts on Buzz? Let's hear from you!

When the Rocket was moved to Knoebels, it was given a green stain (kind of like the Beast has a reddish stain) which makes the ride look like it has mildew all over it but actually makes the coaster blend in beautifully with its surroundings.

That greenish tint is also a charecteristic of Wolmanized wood,one of the types of pressure-treated timber available today.
