Coasters in the Pacific Northwest

Let's go together!  I have never ridden Coaster.  I have been to Vancouver 4 times in my life, but never to PNE.

There's plenty of coasters out there! Ice Mountain Bobsleds, Wild Thing, Thunder Looper.
I do agree a CCI woodie would rock though!

Here is what is going on with the PNE in Vancouver.They are not closing down,but they have to move because their lease with the city of Vancouver expires at the end of 2002.They have already gotten several extensions on their lease while looking for a suitable site to move to.All the rides currently on the property will be moved to the new site with the exception of Coaster.Park official feel it may be too expensive to move Coaster because up to 70% of the wood structure would have to be replaced to comply with current local building codes.I have heard there is a proposal to build a replica of Coaster possibly using the existing trains.My concern for this proposal is the PNE may end with a situation like what happened in Denver,CO with Mr Twister.The superior ride was torn down and replaced with inferior one at the new location.Hopefully,there is a preservation movement to save Coaster.This is the only surviving Carl Phare designed coaster still standing.Coasters designed by Mr Phare once stood in Portland,OR and Seattle,WA.Anyone with any information on any preservation efforts to save Coaster please e-mail me I would like to help save this classic coaster.Coaster is too good of a ride to be torn down.

Wow....  There is a true need to get on the bandwagon here.  I haven't ridden Coaster, but I can assure you that any coaster, regardless if it's in my backyard, should be saved.  Especially a one of a kind!  I will join in the movement.....  anyone with any info?

So, what I'm wondering is, will PNE be open for the 2002 season?  or at least some of it? I want to ride Coaster before it's too late, but perhaps it already is (too late).  Let's have it relocated at Enchanted Village!   Wouldn't that be nice.

You know, Chris, that is a pretty good idea!  I could see that, although I don't know where Six Flags is going to build their coasters out there anyway.  Then again, SF isn't probably looking at buying up a 60 year old ride, no matter what WE say...

To what I have heard about 50 acres.  It looks as though there might be more.  Supposedly, the area surrounding EV is indeed owned by SF.  That would be about 200 acres.  T'would be a nice park if it were true, and filled with B&M's and CCI's... (oh, and taking the PNE coaster and re-building it here)

The Coaster and and the other rides at the PNE/ Playland should be operating for the 2002 season.If Coaster is demolished,it will be after the park has closed for the season.Personally,I would love to see Oaks Park relocate Coaster to their park.Oaks Park and the city of Portland does have historical ties to Coaster.Robert Bollinger helped build Coaster and had a financial interest in the PNE at one time.The Bollinger family owned Oaks Park from 1925 until 1985,when Mr.Bollinger turned Oaks Park into a non-profit association to preserve the park for future generations to enjoy after his passing.Carl Phare,designer of Coaster,was a key figure in the buiding of the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park,as as well as the designer of the Big Dipper,the large wooden coaster which stood there until 1970.The Jantzen Beach Dipper and the PNE Coaster track layout were identical up to the second turnaround.I never got to ride the Dipper,but remember seeing it as a child.I have ridden Coaster numerous times ,however.Based on this,Oaks Park would be a great home for Coaster.I realize the chances of this happening are slim to none,but it makes a nice dream.

Ronald, I have to say that I am proud that you are a fellow Northwesterner...:)  We have a lot to look forward to up here, thankfully, but there is so much that we could lose, and thanks to fellows like you, we have a shot at keeping rides like Coaster.  Kudos!
