Electrocuted dancing ducks at Holiday World

Today a friend of mine at work was telling me of his trips in the 60s to Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana. He said that they had a cage with a duck in it. When you dropped a quarter in the slot a sheet of metal in the bottom of the cage became electrified. The duck would then dance around to try to avoid being shocked while some music played. He watched the duck dance for awhile then his dad gave him a 5 dollar bill and told him to get some more quarters. I thought that it was an interesting story. Thank God that the barbaric age of the 60s is behind us now.

SFStL had some very simular things as recently as the late 1980's. They had the dancing duck, and the piano playing chicken as well as a couple of others that I don't remember, but they were in small enclosed glass booths and you dropped a quarter in and they "performed" for about 30 seconds. I always wondered how they got the duck to dance! The chicken was easy to see, they dropped corn onto the keys that needed to be hit.

How disturbing. I'll file this under the "what were they thinking" file.

There are some things I'm glad I never got to experience.

How cruel to the poor animal. :(  I can't believe that they would do that.

That is an amazing story.  I imagine that happened a lot before the ASPCA came around.  Good to know that was in the past (I hope).   Makes you wonder what is happening at third world parks.

I can remember at Jenkinson's Boardwalk in NJ in the 70's they had a chicken enclosed in glass you played tic-tac-toe with.... same concept with the corn. It dropped where the chicken had to make his next move.  One time either the chicken got full or it ran out of corn in the middle of the game (not sure which) and the game stopped halfway.... pretty funny.

Attitudes have changed alot since then. I don't think that anyone in the USA would appreciate that much now. Imagine someone catching us, putting us in a cage and shocking us everytime someone dropped a quarter in a slot. I'd rather be dead. Now fortunatly, Holiday World concentrates on building great rides.

Man, that's really sad that they'd do that to an animal for fun.  Disgusting if you ask me...I'm a big animal lover though.  Thank god that this sort of thing doesn't occur anymore...
