Building a Roller Coaster

I have been wondering... Do you have to have certain permits or what-not to have a coaster built for you? As long as it is on your own land I would figure that you could. Maybe even build your own. *shrugs* I don't know. Anyone have any clues about the proceedures?

Ive been wondering the same thing.The only chance in that happening for me,is if i hit the lotto.

Well I think this has to do with the topic, but what about building your own from scratch?

I've been doing exactly that for 4 months. So far I've got the supports up, and I still dont have a clue where I can get curved I-Beam track.

The layout is somewhat interesting, a double drop down my property, I think a total of 23 feet :) , and then it goes up a 90 degree incline and falls back down. Nothing expensive, just a wheeled lawn chair.

LOTS of work, but cheaper then hiring B&M...

I'm sure that you would need a permit. Where I live you have to have a permit to build a DECK.

I'm guessing if you need a permit to build a deck, you probably would have to have a permit to build a ROLLERCOASTER.

I was think of building a bobsled-type-chute off my roof. That would be pretty cool, only one minor problem: I couldn't get the "rolling stock" up there.

I imangine you would need to get building permits first. Then it would depend on your local zoneing, You know kinda like the stuff that wouldn't let you keep a horse in the city.
It would be cool to build somthing. A side friction would be cool. The rolling stock is the tough part though.

I have a set of really old, (probably from the early sixties) Popular Mechanics Home Improvement Books. They have a small kiddie coaster project in there. It is basically a double dip ramp with a simple car that uses roller skates for wheels. I think Little Tykes markets something similar. These books also have plans for a small Ferris Wheel and Carousel.

i would get custom coasters inc to build me a wooden coaster and B&M to do a steel one for me, I would have one in my garden (if it was big enough) but you would need special planning permission to do this
My Ultimate dream is to contact the nearest Theme Park like Alton Towers in the UK and say what ride I want built give them 3/4 of the money and then deal with the coaster company who can built it for me that way I can get for Free and the park only needs to provide 1/4 of the cost of the coaster. I would spent at least 5 million on a wooden coaster and a steel coaster.

If I won some huge amount of money (like $150 million), I'd buy a giant tract of land, build the world's largest coaster (~430 feet tall, 100+ MPH, 10,000 feet long), and build my house on the property. From Intamin, that would probably cost around $50-75 million. Then, I'd have to hire maintenance guys, which would cost a lot, but if I sold tickets per ride during the summer (about 10 bucks a ride), and just made it a reservation type system, so you could ride 5 times max a day, and I'd allow around 10,000 rides per day. (reservation system) Hey, $100,000 a day would probably pay for the mechanics, ride ops and then some. I think enthusiasts and even some of the GP would pay 10 bucks and make a trip out to ride the world's first 400 foot coaster, don't you? Of course, the reservation system would be in place so I could reserve lots of off time, so I could ride it with my friends exclusively if I wanted to.

Or, to make it even more exotic, I'd make it personal, and only allow the GP to ride the ride during one week a year. Reservations need to be made in advance. It would be the legendary coaster!

My dad used to have a subscription to the Rollercoaster! magazine that came out 4 times a year. And in one of the issues they showed a guy who built his own little coaster off the top of his house. It dropped about 14 feet and then went over a little bump and then into a tunnel with little brakes in it. Nothing big, but having any type of coaster in your own backyard would be great.

Now if I had the money I would buy up some land near Cody Wyoming. And I would build a roller coaster out there. It wouldn't have to be big and it wouldn't have to be one of a kind. It would just have to be fun. I would probably get GCI to do it for me, and then sell rides for 2$ apice. I would have other little attractions, like laser tag and bumper boats. It would be like a mini theme park.

First of all you can't build a coaster open to the public on residential or farm land. Second you have to okay it with you city/county if it is PERMANENT. If you live in a sub division or on a lake then you must okay it with your local association (if you have one). Be careful if you plan on building one. If it's permanent you have to get permits (as you would have to have footers). If it is transportable than I don't think you would have any problems. Even then watch for tricky laws that they could use against you. For example many city's do not allow trailers or non permanent structures to be built on certain parts of the property. Just make sure you research before you build.

I have a magazine(Roller Coaster from ace)it was from 91' and shows many pictures of a backyard coaster and tells how it was built. The builder had the station on the top of the roff and then he use a simply pully system to bring the car back up(he had to push the back around the track to where the first drop was,then he use the pully).If you want to see you can order the magazine from ace.

Magnum is sinking: I'd probably establish it as a theme park that my house happens to be on. Unfortunately, I'm never going to win $150 million, so it's kind of a moot point.

Adding more onto this topic, I can't remember what park it was, but it started out just as a plain park. Then they added a small carnival ride. Then they just added more little attractions and then eventually, they bought a rollercoaster. It is very hard to just say, "Hey lets build 5 new rollercoasters here." You have to start small and work up. That would be the key for me. Even if I just had a little ride that I made for the public to ride. The money would help me buy more things. Hence, making my newly forming park better.
