Six Flags....the name???

Does anyone know where the name "Six Flags" came from? What was there six of? When did the name first appear?

Good question. I have wondered that too. I think there were six parks around America, but I don't know where the "flags" came from. I'm really just guessing, I have know idea.

I think, I'm not sure, but It was Six Flags in Texas because texas had Six different soverigntie. That's what I have always been told, hence Six Flags Over Texas. Now it's just a brand name, but I think that's where the Original came from. who knows, if I'm right or not, at least it sounds good, LOL! :)

There used to be a video that played on the T.V.s in line for the monster plantation at Six Flags Over Georgia. That video gave the history of Six Flags, it said that the name was six flags because Texas had been ruled by six countries during its history, The Confederate States of America, England, Spain, The Republic of Texas, The United States, and Mexico. Not only was Six Flags representitive of how many countries the state belonged to, but also of the number of themed areas. It was the intent of the original owners to have six different themed areas of all their parks that were unique to the region that the park was located in. Apparently this is not the case anymore since evey SF has the same old same old now.

MFBound is correct. Since I was born and raised in Texas and still live here and plan to die here, that bit of trivia was a natural to me. I also live about 120 miles from that true original Six Flags park, Six Flags Over Texas, now in its 39th season this year. After yesterday visiting the world's first Six Flags park and riding the world's first mine train coaster and watching the world's first log flume ride (I wasn't gonna ride it! Too damn cold!), I am proud to say that the park is better than ever!

39 YEARS!!??! you mean to tell me the park has been named "Six Flags Over Texas" Since 1961? Wow, I had no IDEA Six Flags has been around so long. It's excellent to hear that the classics are still classics.

In addition, you southerners/westerners are incredibly lucky! Up North, where our winters are 20 degrees instead of 70, our parks cannot manage to stay open in the cold. Mail me some heat, Southern Man! ;)

We have to wait all winter to even have a NOTION of what Six Flags Ohio actually will look like.

Unfortunately, Florida and California and maybe Vegas are the only blessed places with year-round coasting. SFoT is closed for the winter too. The park just opened this last weekend and will be open daily for the next 2 weeks for their "Spring Break Out" deal. Then they'll be weekend only until about mid-May when they go daily.

I needed a good fix, so I went this Monday. I also needed to get my girlfriend broke in on coasters so she can ride Millennium Force with me this summer at Cedar Point!
