Is ACE the way to go?

Yes, 50 bucks for a single person is steep, but worth it in my opinion. The ACE NEWS Newsletter is nice to receive in the mail, however with the internet and, well mainly Coasterbuzz, the majority of that news is not really new. I still like carrying around the latest copy to read when I'm bored.
"Roller Coaster" Magazine is still my favorite ACE publication. It has a couple really well written articles and some good accompanying color photos. The rest are in B/W. Call me obsessive, but I'll read those articles a good two or three times. In addition, the front and back cover photos are always great.
I can't say much for the Cons, seeing as how I've never been to one. Oh, but that will change when I go to Stark Raving Mad next year.

I don't know where you live, but in Southern Ohio it's worth it.
I say that because I get invited to the PKI media days and events every year. For example, they are shooting a Discovery Channel special there this weekend, and we all were invited to "fill seats" on the Beast and SoB.
Plus, you get discounts and get to ride the Beast first before the park opens.
If your local park doesn't do that, still you get the opportunity to go on lots of trip and ride coasters before and after the park is open, get backstage tours, etc. And you get magazines and newsletters with good articles (although the news is always months late). I'd say it's worth it.

ACE is definately worth it. It's only $50 a year ($65 for a couple) and the perks are awesome. You get a newsletter and of course "Roller Coaster" magazine.
But the best part is the riding. At the conventions not only do you get alot of ERT, which is sweet!, but you are surrounded by people that love coasters. You always have someone to ride with, or to talk to, and it's pretty cool.
I would urge you to join ACE, when you see all the different regional and national events, you'll wish you had joined sooner!

If the $50 doesn't KILL you, join! The mags and newsletters are cool (and not available in stores, haha), but the Events ROCK! ACErs everywhere, cool people, ERT is awesome - you never have to be THE ONE to get people cheering and excited about the ride. I get tired sometimes of trying to get a whole trainload of people excited to ride, and at ACE events you can just join the already-screaming crowd.

As An ace member I think Its a good deal. Yeah the magazines are a little out of date especially if your reading the news here. but if you got $50

Let's calculate how it'll work for me in the 2001 season alone, shall we?
The cost: - $50
The saving:
- Since I would have gone to KennyKon regardless, I save $5 by being an ACE member. (-45)
- Saving $19.99 on PKI's admission. (-25.01)
- Saving $12.45 on HW's admission. (-12.56)
So after the savings, I'm essentially paying $12.56 for a year's worth of ACE News, local newsletters, and two RollerCoaster! magazines.
But don't forget the perks! Had I not been in ACE, I obviously wouldn't have been on the Western PA ACE Region's mailing list, and I wouldn't have been able to go to the X-Flight commercial shoot!
And for being in the shoot, SFWoA gave me two complimentary tickets. Those alone are worth $80!
Looks like ACE actually made me money! ;)

Keep in mind that you don't have to be a member to get into the events, you just have to pay a little more.
I joined the European Coaster Club www.coasterclub.org just for the First Drop magazine. In addition to good coverage of the US parks, you get even better coverage from Europe of stuff you might not otherwise see. ECC is US $35.

I am a member of the Great Ohio Coaster Club and this is my 3rd year. I dropped ACE 2 years ago because they are too pricey (50.00 vs 20.00 for GOCC) and for the most part most all the coaster club only stuff GOCC is part of too!
(The only thing I have heard different is the out of the country stuff)

I am an ACE member and I don't know how great the ERT's are at certain parks anymore. ACE has grown to over 8,000 members and there are just too many people at the ACE events. I was at KennyKon and because of the many members, the ERT only offers about one ride. ACE is becoming crowded with members and 1 hour ERT's are only one ride for the members. 1 hour ERT's used to provide 4 to 5 rides for members.

Thank you!!You answered my question and, I didn't even have to ask it,lol.I was going to join ACE this year but, I am now looking into the smaller groups.I really can't afford to travel to alot of the ACE events because, I have two very small kids.I still *might* join just for that magazine and news letter and any events that are held within a four hour driving range.

I was at Kennykon this year. During the 1 hour ERT on PR i got 4 rides. I don't know how you only managed to get one. Those four rides included one wait for the front seat also.
CoasterCon this year had over 600 people, and my longest wait during any ERT was about 15 minutes for Great Bear at Hershey.
ACE events are big, but they aren't crowded disasters.
