Here's My Story (What's Yours?)

I never thought I'd become a coaster enthusiast. My first adult coaster was the Comet at the now defunct Lincoln Park in Dartmouth MA. I thought I was going to die and did't ride another coaster for years. My favorite ride was the Round-Up which I rode every year at the County Fair. One year the Round-Up had been replaced by a grisly contraption called the Skymaster ( looping ship ride). The fair had nearly completed its run when I finally got the nerve to go on the thing. The first ride terrified me; the second got me hooked. Desperate to ride the Skymaster again I searched the Web for info on other local fairs. At one of these I went on a log flume--my first ride with any kind of a drop since high school. Instead of being terrified I was exhilerated and knew I was ready for the real thing: a roller coaster. Went to Canobie Lake a short time afterwards and fell in love with the Yankee Cannonball. From there I moved on to Riverside Park/Six Flags New England and rode the Thunderbolt, the Cyclone ( back seat!!) and finally SROS. Now there's nothing I won't ride. I wish I had a chance to ride the old Comet again. Bet I'd love it now.
Well, my story goes like this: I've always amusmement parks/theme parks ever since I was a kid, but when I was little I didn't really want to ride any coasters, save for the Whizzer at PGA, which is now defunct. :( Anyways, my mother and I would ride that coaster over and over again, it was awesome to me back then, and still would be today. When I was about 7 or 8 though, way back in 1982 or 83 ;), my brother's friend decided that I needed to go on the Demon. Well, there was no way on Earth that I would ride that coaster, but for some reason I got in line. We headed up the lift hill and I just shut my eyes and waited for the ride to be over. When we got back to the station, I thought, "it wasn't so bad." So I decided to get in line again, only this time I was going to open my eyes. From then on I've been hooked. I would ride anything you put in front of me. Of course I still had a little trepidation, but I became better. Now, I consider myself a hardcore enthusiast and there is nothing I won't go on, save for the Skycoaster, which I'm trying to muster up enough courage to do. ;) I was even married on a coaster, Medusa at SFMW just this past March. What a service! Check out photos here: http://medusathewedding.homestead.com/index.html
I can't imagine a life without coasters now. I'll be riding until I can't ride any longer, which hopefully (knock on wood) will be a VERY long time. :)
Well, I have been riding coasters since I can remember. My parents got season passes every year to PKI until about 4 years ago. Well, the last day that PKI was open last season, my friend invited me up. It was the first time I have been up there in 3 years. Anyway, we rode SOB first thing, and I was hooked. Now I cant imagine my life without coasters.

I have a short story on how I became an enthusiast. Well it all started when I was 5 and I wanted to ride Big Thunder Mountain at Disney World. I was all ready to get into the train when they stopped me and measured me. I was an 1/2 inch to short. I was so mad which drove me want to ride every rollercoaster I can today. I have yet to have been back to Disney World to conquer Big Thunder Mountain.

Favorite Wood: Viper at SFGAM, Shivering Timbers
Favorie Steel: Magnum and Raging Bull
For me, my first coaster was the Matterhorn Bobsleds. The summer camp I went to made a trip to Disneyland every summer (back in the days of the ticket books). The first summer I was old enough to ride it, I cried and faked a stomach ache so that I wouldn't have to go on it....I didn't have to. The next summer, I tried the same thing, but the counselors didn't buy it and made me ride it. I've been hooked ever since. I love roller coasters and will be riding as long as I possibly can.
Whoa, great topic! (warning-long!)

My coaster story-
It started in 1991 when I went to Carowinds with my Mom, Dad, Aunt, Uncle, and 2 cousins. I rode Scooby Doo, which seemed hugmungous at the time. I remember not hating it, but not loving either, mainly because I had some stomach virus thing, and I puked at the waterpark. (remember that next time you go to Carowinds ;)) Fast Forward to 1994, at Kings Dominion, I could have ridden every coaster at the time except for Shockwave. What do I decide to do? Spend the whole damn time in kiddie land. I was just terrified of them, I wouldn't even ride their Scooby Doo, which was real bad because my 2 year old brother did! I think it was something sublimable having to do with throwing up on coasters. 1996, Disney World I again was too scared to ride Space Mountain, and Splash Mountain. But my parents did manage to get me on Big Thunder Mountain, when I got off, I said let's do it again! We didn't though. 1997, Carowinds with many of my friends in the Boy Scouts. I got up enough courage to ride Goldrusher... spent the rest of the time in kiddieland. Also chickened out on Gauntlet (a flying carpet) 1998, Busch Gardens Williamsburg. I told my parents that I would start with BBW, if I liked that I would go to LNM, then DF, then Alpie. I did ride BBW, and the mouse, but that's it. I'm really kicking my-self in the*****for not riding it too, oh well, I'll get to it within a year. Also, I rode all 3 flat rides in the Da Vinci section. I did not however ride Escape from Pompeii. 1999, June. I got RCT, started visiting sites like Thrillride (R.I.P.) 1999, Labor Day weekend, Carowinds. Started off with Gold Rusher, then went to Carolina Cyclone, my first looper, rode that 3 times, then to Vortex. I also "conquered" The Gauntlet, and White Water Falls. I would've done Powderkeg Flume, but the line was too long. Then to Top Gun... this is the coaster that I credit with making me an enthusiast. It was awesome, and it was night too, Top Gun at night, gotta love it... Note, I was still to scared to go on Hurler and Thunder Road. 2000, SFoG day 1, rode, DMT, Ninja, GS, BTR, still too scared to do the woodies. Day 2, while in line for Thunder River, my dad accidentally knocks one of my mom's lenses into the "river". They go to get her a new lens, and leave me in the park alone. I feel myself strangely going towards the Cyclone, I didn't even really think about it, it helped because I didn't have anyone nagging me. After Cyclone I immediately went to GASM, I was certainly hooked on woodies now. from there, I rode pretty much every coaster I encountered, and since then I've been to SFA, IoA, Carowinds again(where I rode Thunder Road, Hurler, and FSS) and then Kings Dominion where I rode all 11 coasters. Recently, on my last trip to Carowinds, I did the Xtreme Skyflyer.. alone. I highly recommend everyone do this at least once, ... listen Coasterman J ;) It'll be well worth it, (of course when I went, it only cost 10 bucks, instead from the regular $30)
I practically grew up at Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland. My first coaster was Timberline Twister (I think) at Knott's. That thing scared the daylights out of me, yet, I would always go on it. I think it was because my mom and my brother would always go on it (Hey, I was only, what, 5).

Fast forward to when I was 12. I went on the Matternhorn for the first time. I thought I was going to crash into the "mountain". I cried for an hour after that. I would not ride that for a few years. And when I did I was sooo disappointed, but now I love it.

The next year I went to Magic Mountain for the first time. I shocked practically everybody I went with when I went on the Revolution. I loved that! (Not anymore!) The only other coaster I went on was Ninja (Goldruhser was closed) that was the first time I experienced "headbanging".

Roller Coaster Tycoon really sparked my enthusiasm for coasters. The Roller Coaster book by David Bennet also sparked my enthusiasm. The coaster that did it was GhostRider. *** This post was edited by Coaster File on 8/3/2001. ***
I was hooked even before I was thought of. The parents rode Mr. Twister at Elitch's on their honeymoon in 1970......little did they know! Now, I ride everything AND use my artistic approach in building models! Ohio State Fair here I come!
