Alpine slides - locations, tactics

I know these aren't coasters, but they are just as fun, in my opinion. I have ridden only one: the double slide at the top of the mountain in Gatlinburg, TN. Does anyone know where I can find others - especially in the Ohio area?

I find the only downer about the alpine slide is when someone gets ahead of you who is slow (for those who don't know, the slide is like a bobsled trough where you can control your speed). I don't know about others, but the one I've ridden can safely be taken at full throttle if you're careful. It helps to put one arm on the control stick and the other straight out to your side to help you balance around curves.

On the other hand, I have seen someone crash. She was going carelessly fast; I don't think she knew the dangers. Anyway, she flipped her sled and slid for about 50 feet on her face. Ouch. I witnessed this from the ski lift over the slide.

Any other stories?

Seven Springs (an hour east of Pittsburgh) has a really neat Alpine Slide! I too have taken many rides on this at full throttle, only slowing slightly on curves. The idea of independently controlling your own ride makes these things unique!

Alpine Slides are awesome! I haven't been on one in awhile, but I know they have 3 at Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ. Also they are all over Vermont. My favorite one was in Stowe, Vermont. Except towards the bottom I got stuck behind someone slow, so when that happens, stop your sled and wait.

I used to ride these things quite a bit when I was younger. I wish I remember where. They are a great ride. I always wondered how often accidents happen. A lot of the course isn't visible from the ground or from the top. How would the operators know if somebody crashed? They could keep sending down sleds until there is a huge pileup.

There is one around Park Mammoth, in Kentucky. I think its in Park City, not sure. But there is a bilboard for it that you can see from the highway. That will tell ya where it is

There's one in Lutsen,MN up on the Lake Superior Coast. It runs down Eagle Mtn., a 3,000 ft peak. It's pretty sweet.

This company makes them, but they look like metal slides, not the cement ones I have ridden. Is there a main manufacturer of these things?

As for locations, there are lots of them. Kentucky (Mammoth Cave in Cave City), Minnesota (Wild Mountain in Taylors Falls), Illinois (Chestnut Mountain in Galena), New Hampshire (Attiash Bear Peak in Bartlett), Vermont (In Stowe, Bromley and Killington), Colorado (In Golden, Winter Park and Breckenridge) and I am sure many other states that have them.

I've been on one at Attitash/Bear Mountain in New Hampshire.

They have a good slide in Park City, UT. It is quite a long ride with a lot of good drops! You will crash if you take this at full throttle.

I have a Rand/McNally road atlas from the mid 80s that lists an alpine slide in the Bellfontaine/Wapokeneta area of Ohio (possibly as part of the Mad River Mountain ski area?). Anyone know about this? C'mon, RideMan, I'm counting on you!

Although this is not listed in my 1999 atlas, so it very well may be gone.

There's an Alpine Silde at Camelback Ski Area in the Poconos in Pennsylvania. This is the only one I've ridden. They have two identical trails running down the side of the mountain one for beginners and one for the speed demons. http://camelbeach.com

I know they have an Alpine Slide in Park City, UT and Jackson Hole, WY.

I have done one up in Vermont one time a few years back. I loved it. I am one of those people who likes to go carelessly fast. Needless to say I didn't slow down enough in time before one of the banked turns and I was launched about 8 feet in the air. I landed on my knees and they were all cut up. I slowly got up and continued down the hill. When I got to the bottom my legs were covered in blood and they called a mini ambulance thing and they bandaged me up.

I love these things, they are great if you are a speed demon!

I have only been on one slide and that was in Ober Gatlinburg, in Gatlinburg TN. As for tactics i don't know what i did but man it goes fast, one tip, when they say that track is hot, they aren't lying.

Theres one in Southern California near Big Bear Lake. Its located at a place called Magic Mountain. In addition to the slide and ski lift theres two water slides, an arcade, and an area for snowplay in the winter.

I rode the Alpine Slide at Action Park. There were 3 of them...two were exactly alike, but the third was for speed demons. There was a sign :You must be 16 or older to ride this slide! on the speed demon one. Well, I was 11 or 12, and I snuck on. The guy didn't seem to care, anyway. This thing was longer, bigger drops, and you were able to go much faster thanks to wider turns! I had the time of my life on this thing! Sadly, in the winter of '99-'00, Mountain Creek removed the slide to create a new ski run. Not a bad ski slope, but I sure do miss my slide.

Also, the one at CamelBack Ski Resort is pretty kick-arse as well. This one can let you go really fast without worrying about killing yourself. Very fun and long. The ski slopes on this mountain are excellent, too. I suggest the Double Black Diamond 70 degree slope of CliffHanger! One of the greatest ski slopes I have been on!

There's one at Mount Hood, which is about a 45-minute drive from Portland, Oregon. They have two separate parallel slides, and the last time I was there (two years ago) they were trying to get the younger or inexperienced riders to use one of the slides and the more daring folks to use the other one.

The only one that I have been on is at Breckenridge and if you are very carefull you can take it on at full throttle. They have three courses.
