What's so great about The Phoenix?

I've heard a lot of people on this site praise The Phoenix at Knoebel's as being a great
ride. I watch America's Greatest Roller Coaster Thrills 2 and I wasn't all that impressed
with it. It looked somewhat slow. On the other hand, Twister looked spectacular. It looks
very smooth and fast.

Give me some reasons why you think The Phoenix is a great ride.

I was like you, I wasn't expecting too much because it looks pretty plain on video, but when you're riding it seems fast and a bit out of control. Every hill has airtime, it's pretty insane. I thought the back was better than the front, but I think that about every woodie.

Twister on the other hand, looks better than it is, IMO. It has a nice layout, but not much airtime.

It's very hard to judge a ride just from video footage. Phoenix, in particular, is a GREAT ride to actually EXPERIENCE.

B&M Webmaster: Ditto! Twister was a bit of a letdown for me three weeks ago when I rode it for the first time(s). Phoenix on the other hand was better than I had remembered from two and three years ago. Massive quantities of airtime, especially in seat 1-3. That seat is called the ejector seat for good reason.
CPgenius: looks are deceiving for sure when talking about these two.

I rather preferred the front of Phoenix. It's one of those coasters that really throws you up as you're cresting its many hills. This is a ride that is just well balanced. It doesn't exert extreme and uncomfortable forces on the riders, the scenery's nice, the trains are comfortable, it's got a dozen hills of guaranteed airtime, and its in Knoebels.

Can't judge a ride by its appearance alone. There's a reason so many enthusiasts claim this is one of their top coasters (myself included).

Twister's good too, one of the better twisters, but Phoenix is a bit more re-rideable.

Let people have thier opinions, i haven't ridden the pheonix but, i thought the thunderbolt was gonna be bad, and it was really great. I always thought people we stupid to think that was such a good ride. but it actually is.

Interesting...I was also thinking how people are so into The Raven. On that video, it doesn't look that exciting. It also looks very short. Hopefully I'll be able to see how it feels like in real life in a couple of days...

This coaster has the most airtime out of all the other woodies I've ridden. There's one point that I swear I almost get ejected from the train. I've ridden both the back and front, but I prefer the front. I found the front to have a lot of airtime while the back also has a lot of airtime and is intense. It's a fun ride. I think the tunnel is a nice touch also.
It's definately my favorite woodie so far.

I liked Twister also, but because I prefer airtime, I enjoyed Phoenix more.

If you like airtime, the Phoenix is just about perfect. Airtime is everywhere, especially on the final speed hills which lead right into the brakes. Depending on where you sit, this could be some of the most intense airtime you will ever experience on a wooden coaster!

In addition to airtime, the ride has a fantastic first drop which feels a lot larger and steeper than it is, an effective double-up/double down, and a wonderful tunneled approach to the lift hill.

Then, of course, there is the magic of Knoebels!

As everyone is saying, the Phoenix is totally awesome, it has the most airtime on any coaster.

The tunnel is pitch black and the first time you ride you don't know where you're going to come out.

I much preferred the front as there was floater airtime on EVERY hill - the double-up double-down is wonderful as it the crest of the turnaround immediately after it.

The ride is so much fun I just didn't want to get off. The park is great as well.

Phoenix Tip: try and ride it when the ride is full, it goes a lot faster and the airtime is insane.

Twister was good, and had two moments of airtime in the front seat, but that was all.

The Phoenix is one of those rides that must be experienced to be believed. There is airtime everywhere! If you sit in the last seat, you literally stand on every drop (especially the last few bunny hops leading to the station).

Now I REALLY have to get back to Knoebels sometime this year.

Phoenix = The Perfect Woodie!!

Not having rode it, I can tell you from watching that video, those people are getting air. It's the only video that people have those looks on thier faces, and thier heads bob in perfect little rows, it's beautiful. Some of these other coasters on video just usually look like the people are putting thier hands up a little higher or something. Each row goes up, one at a time:).

Whoa! I can't wait to ride it. It's going to scare the crap out of my dad who spent the entire ride on Superman at NE trying to get the lap bar down farther because he thought he was going to fly out. LOL! It was rather amusing. :)

Koaster King - your dad won't have much luck doing that on the Phoenix, what with their single-position (VERY roomy) lap bars. THAT will be amusing. When are you going?

The airtime on Phoenix was spectacular. I liked Twister as well, especially the little tunnel, but it gave me a headache because I thought it was quite rough.

Your dad won't be able to push the lap bar down on Phoenix. It has one fixed position. It's just you body the moves. It's kind of like a standup woodie. You don't start out standing up. but that's the position that you wind up in. Holding on tight to the fixed bar.

What's so great about The Phoenix? The airtime, the airtime, the airtime! I just rode it for the first time last week, and it was insane! Example number one of why small wooden coasters beat huge wooden coasters most of the time. And it's another example of why we need to preserve our older coasters that are in danger of destruction. Secure anything in your pockets, for it will go flying. I agree with everyone about Twister. It's a nice, fast coaster with that great double helix, but it can't beat The Phoenix.
