What makes a Top 10 coaster ?

What is that gets it to the top 10 ?
the inversions?
the first drop?
What ?

I would say Air Time, Pacing, Intensity, and a number of other things. Differences are vast which is why you must differentiate steel and wood.

I would have to say that it can't be on the list each year.the top 10 list should change regularly to keep things fresh and new.but as far as ride qualifications to be on the list the coaster should have :good speed,pacing as well as plenty of airtime and lets not forget height as well,lets face the facts though.each one of us have our own top 10 list for our own various reasons.after all we each have our fave's.

I definitely agree, you can't compare steel and wood coasters! There are many different things I look for in each. For wood, I like a turbulent, fast paced ride with tunnels and such. Airtime is awesome, too. For steel, it's all about the pacing, and using the right number of turns, dips, inversions, etc.

I would say you need to watch the shows "Top Ten Coasters" and "More Top Ten Coasters". They talk about what makes a good top 10 coaster in the begining.

For me it is Airtime baby!

id say moderation. a coaster that has many elements to it. it isnt high speed the entire time and its not crawling along the track either. needs up and down time.

Wood: Intensity, "lateral air", ejector airtime, pacing, location, tunnels, and it has to challenge me a bit. [Legend, Raven, Coney Cyclone...]

Steel: Intensity, "lateral air", pacing, airtime and laterals. [All 3 RoS', Nitro, Kumba...]

They can't be painful, overbraked, or poorly paced.
They *must* have airtime, and a good locale, a tunnel or two, and lateral air never hurts either!

Most of all- they gotta be FUN!!! :)

Well, if you look at somthing like the Discovery Channels top 10, it basically has to do with location: Florida, California, and Ohio, are basically the only ones that make it on. I would say there is no true top ten, because everyone's opinion varies.

You have a point there. Perhaps the question would have been better phrased: "What makes a great coaster?"

For me, I like a ride that is just as fun in the middle and end as it is during the first drop. Airtime, pacing, headchoppers, etc.

Yeeee Haaawwww!

An insanely intense ride with tons of G's, lots of airtime, speed and steep drops galore, and a wide variety of elements, a ride that confuses and totally feels out of control, and a ride that leaves you with ear-to-ear smiles and the words "I love that ride!" coming from your lips. For wooden coasters, call me crazy, but I like them to throw me around and be totally in control of the ride. Most smooth wood is pretty much crap- wood is suppoused to feel out of control with loads of airtime and laterals!!!Anyways, if wooden coasters are built smooth, why do we have steel and what makes steel different from wood? For steel, I look for a fast, bullet-like, sleek feeling. It is supposed to feel smooth and fast-unlike wood. Inversions are always a plus, and many moments of positve G's are good on a steel.
