New Jersey piers go from amusement parks to near-vacant lots

The red and white sign from the Tilt-A-Whirl no longer shined brightly, inviting visitors to take a ride. Instead, it lay flat on a forklift, indicating its job was done for this year. It is an annual fall ritual that will be repeated on ride after ride until Surfside Pier, at 25th Avenue and the Boardwalk in North Wildwood, looks more like a vacant lot than a vibrant amusement pier.
