Zippin Pippin demolished after partial collapse

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The Zippin Pippin has taken its last ride in Memphis, partially collapsing Thursday before being dismantled for sale to Green Bay. A commissioner said a portion of the ride collapsed and they decided to tear down the rest.

"Dismantle" and "Demolish" seem to be confusing on several of the recent coaster losses.

Why would anyone pay for a pile of rubble and ancient prints?

They aren't. They're paying for the blueprints, lift motor, chain, steel running rails, and other salvageable parts. The wood is scrap and was going to have to be replaced during the rebuild regardless of the collapse or how gingerly they took the ride down.

Regrdless of what condition any wood coaster is in. A large portion of the wood is not reused.

Didn't Little A Merrick A purchase one of the N.A.D. trains from Zippin Pippin? I believe that is the train I saw during their cool coal train ride.

My favorite MJ tune: "Billie Jean" which I have been listening to alot now. RIP MJ.

Well that stinks...

Did Zippin Pippin have a NAD train many many years ago? When it closed in 2005 it had only one train, an old PTC.

Here's a question. What's a Pippin anyway? And why would half a dozen coasters be given that name?

I only knew it as a musical. Think about your life... Pippin!

Pippin is also a type of apple.

^^ But I'm sure this coaster and Thunderbolt are older than Ben Vereen, although finding your corner of the sky is a nice tie-in with a coaster.

Pippin (a.k.a. Peregrin Took) was one of the eight companions who accompanied Frodo on his quest to destroy the One Ring.

'Zippin Pippin' was therefore actually a very ribald nickname whispered amongst the hobbit-lasses.

I believe those are the trains from the Lincoln Park Comet.

Certain victory.
