There's one guy who works at a certain arcade, and literally every time he posts, he plugs the arcade and puts down all the others. He even starts topics like "Faggots, Don't Be Gay - Come to XX Arcade" (that is an actual thread that has six pages worth of posts).
So I called him on it, and I got insulted, sworn at and ripped to shreds.
I may or may not have met some of these people at the arcades. Of the few times when I've seen real DDR players, they've been loud, obnoxious, rude, insulting, profane, etc. Anyway, I've decided to stick to the morning arcade visits when no one's there... I really don't want to be involved in the Columbus "scene" if this is what it's like.
Are your local scenes better? I hope so...
As Some of you know, I work aand play at a Tilt arcade. Whenever I see or hear stuff like that going on, I'll be the first to make sure it stops. It sucks when you're new to the game and you're being made fun of by veteran players, so I try to keep that to a minimum, if not stomp that out completely. Truth be told, I'll try to make the people who play feel better about themselves. Teaching one to play DDR is fun, and to be honest, quite challenging, but once they get the hang of things, it's quite rewarding.
I dare say that if I saw or heard anyone utter something under their breath about me or any of my DDR players, they will be the first ones to be banned from the arcade completely. Not to go on a power trip, but as I said, either you shut up and watch, or try your luck and risk being made even greater fun of.
My favorite thing to do to shut talkers up? I'll give them 2 tokens from my own money and force them to play. When they have no clue at what they're doing, then that's when I have people make fun of them. It usually shuts people up and makes them resepct what some try to do, ie - learn how to play the game, or to at least advance on their skills.
I have no problems at all at Tilt, which seems funny. A lot of people complain about the pads, which sends them away, making my job easier. No one usually plays, unless it's a regular. I'm there by myself most often playing a game of doubles.
Personally, I think DDR is dumb; but that's just my opinion. I've tried it, did okay at a couple easy levels. But it just didn't do it for me. But if others are having a good time, more power to them; regardless of skill level, rookie or self proclaimed 'veteran.' Why they feel the need to make fun of others who are trying to learn is beyond me. As if they were never beginners themselves. It's a freakin' arcade game, people. Get over yourselves.
Strangely enough, as much as I dislike DDR, the drum version I adore! I don't know if anybody has seen it yet, but it's the same idea, except you play the drums to rock songs. Can't remember the exact name of it, though.
It's truly amazing how shallow some people are.
That's why I love playing at Cal Poly. Everyone there is mature and friendly. There are about 8 or so regular players, and not one of us has gotten out of line about ANYTHING. We help each other out and encourage each other, (even though we compete amongst each other) and just have fun with it. It's unfortunate that alot of other places aren't like Cal Poly.

If you want to be tough, at least go to a real bar and play pool, have some bears
Yep, there's nothing like a good bear after a relaxing game of pool. Them polar ones are especially frosty! :) (had to... it was too good to pass up)..
Anyway, Den I agree with you. But, I've been a member of Ohioddr since its inception (and know the guy who runs it), and I know it's all an act.
Are most of them acting stupid and ignorant because they're mostly teenagers with nothing better to do? Yeah. Are they taking things a bit far and generally don't care about how they act? Yes, again. But, most of them can get away with that kind of behavior because they don't have anyone ruling the roost. When the admin is only 17/18 and he's dealing with members who are the same age or younger, you get mob mentaility. If Jay (the admin) doesn't stop the behavior (since it wouldn't do any good because the very nature of DDR being a game aimed at the younger generation in the first place), then it only tends to fester.
If you compare it to Coasterbuzz, you A - have Jeff who doesn't tolerate the behavior (mainly because he's in his 30's and is more mature), and B - deals with a subject that appeals to a broader age range than DDR does. Ohioddr isn't a forum so much for DDR as it is for base socialization. I learned to live with it, because I know how they act (most of them call me the 'old timer'....). If I didn't know that this is how they normally are, I would've been offended too, but nowadays I take their posts in stride and ignore the filler material.
If you just want DDR info, I suggest Bemanistyle.com. (I know the admin of that site too, who incidentally used to be in Columbus)... much better for just info. If you're looking for info on the local scene, Ohioddr.com may be the only avenue. BTW, what name are you posting under? I was using IcePagoda (which I still do use), but I'm posting there as Soviet Russia as a play on their idiocy (inside joke....).
If you want local info, stay in the forums dedicated to mid-ohio, just don't hit any of the main discussions. That's what I usually do.

Umm....the only person I even know who plays it is my friend Alex, and I obviously don't think he's a jerk.
Seriously, We have one machine here. It's thiry minutes from my house.

Well, these cool people from the chinese delegation at MSMUN today said they'd played it a few times.
I know a lot of them. *** Edited 1/31/2004 10:23:43 PM UTC by Natalie***
I played with a bunch of kids at GameWorks today who seemed really cool, so I guess not everyone's a jerk. But then again, most of them were at the standard level, so they're probably not the ones who post on OhioDDR...
Considering my age, I guess I really don't want to be a part of the "scene" anyway. What I need is a friend *my* age who likes DDR, but what are the chances of that happening? :)
Anyway, I've learned to go and play it for myself and not to give a rat's ass what other people think. I have more fun that way.
Chris, I didn't realize you were so freaking old. ;)

I talk to the people who work at the arcade all the time though. They're all really cool and sometimes even give free drinks and sometimes even nickels (the games all take nickels), which is pretty cool.
The only downside is that it costs $2.25 to get in, but they have so many coupons floating around that it's really easy to get in for a lower price.
Well it was good enough that their Extreme machine is only 50 cents, it's even better when playing with the college's anime club. Instead of the more offensive (ex: Fags are so gay!) kind of people, I'm playing around some cool people who are playing for fun.
So Tuesday nights, you'll be finding me at Macomb Community/12 Mile High:P ;)

We also have an Extreme at the mall, but the screen is so dark you can barely even see the freeze arrows and the volume is really low. We also have a crappy 2nd Mix (which is the machine I started playing on) at a family fun center type place.
