Your Definition of a Smooth Coaster

Kingda Ka was also a terrible one for me... Vibrations and the "shimmy" with the OTSR's... Bleh.

Yes, I agree with this. I was really surprised at how different Kingda Ka was from Top Thrill Dragster. I thought it would be somewhat similar however it was very rough in comparison.

I have ridden KK on two seperate occasions years apart and it is no contest... Dragster is a much better ride. Always smoother and the lapbar vs. OTSR is a big difference on that type of ride. Not to mention location/views and the better launch... KK may be faster, but Dragster feels more powerful and "smooth", where KK feels almost like gears switching the farther you go. I waited only 3 trains for KK and felt it was too much after my ride this spring (so it has been recently!).

Here's hoping Lemmy gets well soon. I don't want to live in a world where a guy who got kicked out of a space-rock band for taking too many drugs is felled by a hip injury.

Getting back on track to defining "Smooth"

Could I ride the coaster again and enjoy it without getting a headache or "hurt" (ie. knee banged, head banged, lapbar jamming into my ribs). If not, it's not a smooth ride in my opinion. There's a certain point on coasters where the threshold of pain crosses the fun factor. This definitely applied to the old Texas Giant, Mean Streak, and the fallen Son of Beast. And most stand-up coasters.

But, I noticed that smoothness varies depending on where your sitting. The old Texas Giant was alot smoother and milder sitting in the front row. It was still enjoyable. This seems to apply to other woodies I've ridden; Judge Roy Scream, Texas Cyclone, and the Boardwalk Bullet. I've heard some say to sit over the axle/ wheels for a smoother ride.

I recently rode the floorless Superman at Fiesta Texas during ERT. I was very surprised that the back rows seemed smoother than the front. Very surprised as it contradicted my theory on woodies. Anyone else sense that steel coasters are smoother in the back?

In a nutshell, smoothness on a coaster varies on where you sit and your pain tolerance level.

I look up the definition of the words "smooth" and "coaster", and that's my definition of "smooth coaster." What is this topic even about?

A smooth coaster has hardly any bumps or jolts. A bumpy coaster is rough. We have very interesting discussions on CoasterBuzz these days.

smooth
-Free from hair, whiskers, or stubble

coaster
-A small mat or plate placed under a vessel to protect a tabletop or other surface beneath

So...

A hairless table protector.

Depends on the operator, smooth coasters are a product of smooth operators.

This is kind of what I was thinking.

Some of us are smooth coasters, thanks to genetics.

Some of us are smooth coasters, thanks to razors, trimmers, scissors, and Nair.

Some of us are hairy coasters. See cultural subset: Bears.

Me personally, I'm kind of a "medium" coaster.

I read Gonch's definition of "smooth" and I completely misunderstood what he was talking about for something else.

You don't need a parachute to jump out of an airplane. You need one to do it again.

I'm not smooth, but I am smoove.

I'm hairy, but people have tried to set drinks on me on occasion.

Would you consider coaster like Maverick smooth? I kinda wouldn't because it goes pretty hard on your body. The restraints can be uncomfortable too at times. That isn't to say it's rough in any way though.
