Yankee Cannonball... Why so underated?

I was just wondering why no one ever talks about The Yankee Cannonball at Canobie Lake Park. This is a great coaster that I think surpasses Boulder Dash. What other rollercoaster that small gives floater airtime on every hill? No one has ever said anything about this little wooden coaster. Does anyone feel the same as I do?

I think it's underated because it's in a small park that isn't well know.

SFNE Dude - I suspect that because of Canobie's location many enthusiasts don't get to the park, hence it and Cannonball rarely gets spoken of. I know its a park I've wanted to visit for some years now but so far I haven't been able to make it happen. But there are a number of enthusiasts I know - who's opinion and tastes in coasters I trust - who have ridden Cannonball and they all really love it, and I expect to feel the same once I finally get up there.

If its any consolation, ACE's Preservation Con this summer is at Canobie, so perhaps word will spread soon.

I suspect because Boulder Dash isn't trimmed at two locations, actually has banking, provides a more efficent amount of airtime, is a terrain coaster incorperated with landscaping, and has more than one tree in the layout.

Okay, that was just being stubborn. One thing for me, when riding an awsome coaster beforehand and then extremely enjoying it, it's hard to go back and find it tame and to hold up at a high position again. Grant it, very very few buzzers rode Yankee Cannonball before it was modified, but thaat is a big reason for me. When Canobie Lake bought it and modified it, they turnd it into a ride for the whole family, which is good, but only moderately thrilling. Kind of how Paramount's motive was to build a more gentle woodie at PGA(though they created a piece of junk).

How about Blue Streak (CP), Jack Rabbit (Seabreeze and Kennywood), Thunderbolt (SFNE)?

Roller Coaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach(Especially with no seatbelts or lapbars)

Cornball Express

Yankee Cannonball is a nice little woodie, but the list goes to show you, there are many out and back and small woodies that provide many more thrills.

Grant it, I can't say Yankee Cannonball is thrilling, but most definentely fun.

As far as underrated goes how about Twister at Knoebels's. That thing is head and shoulders above Phoenix yet Phoenix is consistently rated higher.

All I need is 4.5 million bucks and a half a mile long sliver of land and maybe someone could build me my very own Shivering Timbers. ;)

Well okay you proved me wrong. You don't have to list any more. The point I was trying to make is that Yankee Cannonball is a great coaster that people should know about. I wasn't trying to say it was better than all the other great wooden coasters you named.

That may be, but there are many others out there that may be considered underated, which is in fact an opinion in itself. Sorry but I don't think we need a thread about underrated or overrated coasters again.

Same reason as most coasters at small parks, not enough people have ridden it. That's why on Top 10 coasters on the Discovery Channel this year you didn't see ST, Legend, and Raven was only at #5, it was based on a poll at the site. Most of the people who voted were the GP, who visited mostly larger parks. It's low ridership, that's all.

What is it Lassie? Did Timmy fall down the well again? Rough. Did Mr. Wilson have a heart attack? Rough. Is the drug dealer here for his money? Rough Rough. RUN!

I think the ride tends to be looked over because even the most experienced enthusiasts tend to sometimes think bigger is better. I used to be one of the people suffering from that "disease" but one ride on Cornball fixed that.

Well I know you all were waiting for the #1 CLP to respond and here i am.

I agree 100% that YC is sooooo underated and I love it, I find it very thrilling and imensly fun and its my # 2 favorite. Its soooo great and i will be going to CLP in 2 weeks and cant wait to go on the new YC with the red paint. Thats why when i see someone say oh im going to SFNE and Lake Compounce and they dont go 2 canobie and i think to myself well there missing out on a lot. Its a great park and i like it more overall then i do SFNE. YC is awsome and i love the continious AIRTIME everywere!

Barely anyone goes to Compounce(which doesn't even adevertise up here so nobody has heard about it). I know everyone at AMS went to Canobie at least twice a year. But once the year 2000 came, along with S:ROS, the two annual trips to Canobie turned to one annual trip to Six Flags. Before Riverside became Six Flags, Canobie could reach a high of 6,000 attendents from school trips in one week. High schoolers would even hang out their for their on their Spring breaks. Now every guy at AHS just wants to take their girlfriend on Superman and kiss on the lift hill. Right now, I believe that number has more than halved because of the "Batman and Superman" park. A lot of New England is rural with small town sprinkled here and there with a population just barely hitting 15,000(mostly seniors). There not a whole lot of buisness to share and when Riverside became Six Flags New England, it took everyone by storm and even indirectly caused two other parks to close.

It seem as if Canobie keeps trying to add and sufficate their park each year to keep up with the competition and you can tell because a lot of their recent addition or overnight tiny stock rides. But the shouldn't haveto add a bunch of things like Over the Rainbow, Flying Sumbarine, and Mini Dinos just to advertise, "7 new ride and attractions this year", just as a counter to the S:ROS and Splash Harbor commercials comig on every othe commercial break.

If Six Flags would invest in al these little flat rides that actually make the park seem well rounded and complete, then they wouldn't be recieving so many rejectments from familys that say there nothing there for all of us.

I mean our Looney Toons Movie Town looks like a Wal Mart parking lot with three kiddie upcharge attractions that cost $3(that's right, ripping of the kids now. They got some tiny eurobungees and trampolines stuff for the kids) cardboard mark ups(that you can see the blank side from the midway) and repainted and renamed a half dozen pint sized rides that the park already had. Did I mention that in this Wal Mart parking lot, kiddie land is like squeezed up into the handicap space?

This is why so many families complain about Six Flags and decide to go to Canobie and Salsbury.

Now Kartland is already full of themselves, they thought they needed a ride exspansion to keep up so they decided to add Dragon Coaster(Dragon Wagon, like 4 in New England isn't enough), Fire Horn Runway, and a mini Ferris Wheel. That wasn't working out, and figuring they needed something more thrilling they invest loads into this VR simulator. Now with the money they spent on that junk they could have just added something like a Frisbee or Mixer and would have been all set, but now they have a lame simulator that has the same two adventures that it did last year, Pirate Cove and Avalanche Run, can't advertise that, so they're out of luck.

If Compounce decided to finally advertise once up in Massachusetts and New Hampshiere, they would finally know that there is a great all-round park in New England with free soda, but wait that would also start taking about a quarter of Canobie's buisness and Boulder Dash would start getting lines over an hour for once......mabye the should keep quiet :)

SFNE Dude, wasn't trying to rub anything in, but was just trying to show that there are doznes of small parks with coaster gems and legends untold of like Yankee Cannonball and Excalibur and very few of them will ever get noticed with the vast number of litte mama and papa park we have up here and the overgrowing coperate parks that get in the way of them.

When was the kiddie Dragon Coaster added?

I've ridden The Yankee Cannonball plenty of times. I live 25 minutes from the park. I love the ride too. I agree it has amazing airtime especially now that they revamped the track. It is much smoother now and the airtime is much more enjoyable and noticable. The only reason it's underrated is because it's at Canobie Lake Park...not Six Flags or Cedar Fair.

SEASUPERSONIC, thats great news! I Might be going there in 2 weeks and you say the airtime is even more noticable and even smooooother... I CANT WAIT!

That is really good news. Does it look good with the new paint? I'm hoping I will catch a trip to Canobie before the summer is over. I live 1 1/5 hours away.
