X is nearing completion

Posted | Contributed by Karl DeAngelo

The supports for X's second inverted Raven Turn are now installed. Track for it was on-site so installation shouldn't be too far off. The turnaround has been completely tracked and track is now beginning to lead into the next element, a twisting front flip.

The unannounced S&S slingshot attraction's structure is complete and reaches high into the sky. It dwarfs it's neighbor, the Dive Devil.

It's had to believe that this ride was just sitting around in development. Without Gary Story seeing this contraption we may not have ever seen this ride made into a reality.

RagingBullGuy and Gatorwoodie:

X is approx 1,000 feet longer than B:TR and Stealth. Considering it's a prototype SFMM and Arrow could have gone with something much smaller.
I applaud them for taking X to the next level and making it the size it is. If this means future models will be taller and longer I think that's great, too!
I agree Mamoosh. With any prototype coaster that performs the type of minuvers that X does, the one thing you DON'T want if your Arrow or SFMM, is some huge 6,000ft torture device (coughSOBcough) that could end up just taking up tons of space. they did the right thing here, the coaster should be long enough and thrilling enough to satisfy us, yet remain a reasonably small risk for the park at a reasonably small price for a prototype.

X is going to be approximately 40-50 seconds from the time the coaster leaves the chain lift to the time it hits the brake run. This is about the same as B:TR(I think a little shorter actually) at that's because of the insane speed that it will carry.

i think that it looks shorter becuase everything is in really big proprotions. The later ones will be much longer. I would love it if it was just the drop and the raven turn.

DWeaver: thanks for not only agreeing but for saying it much better that I did.
Yeah, and that's your opinion DWeaver. Especially when PKI in particular has tons of space to spare. And that's Mr. 7,032 foot woodie to you! ;)

I do agree that 3,000 feet is very long for a prototype, but the pics make it look much smaller than it actually is. I'm sure it will be great nonetheless.

Short or not, if I had the dough, would fly 7,000 miles to L.A. just to ride this baby.

Remember, the extra rails & the pitch mechanism will eat up a lot of kinetic energy. In spite of this, X will be fast & furious. How can it not be with those huge trains? :)

Does that inverted turnaround track look cool or what? One could say this is Arrow's first Inverted coaster & a brilliant first model it is.
I'm a bit confused what is so great about the X???
Oh, I don't know. Verticle drop perhaps???

Has anybody seen the 3rd person animation of X from Twisted Rails? I thought you fly during the bunnyhop back-flip and the turn-around. The animation shows that you are in an inverted position. After seeing this video, the ride doesn't look as intense and people as saying.

Why do people still confuse X with a flying coaster? It is not. You are never in one position for more than a few seconds. So how could you expect to fly through any of the course?

You got to feel sorry for the peeps, they must be so confused by now.

"Look! A new rollercoaster, just like Viper. Why would they build another Viper? Oh, they wanted a steeper drop. Wait a minute, that turn is upside-down, you mean you ride it upside-down? Isn't that dangerous, won't it kill you?"

I remember someone saying that when Stealth was just sitting around, they were very confused! :)
You stay in an inverted position between the raven turn and the in-line twist except for the back flip.

..As he drools he plans his trip to Cali for 2002..
And I remember thinking not too long ago that Arrow should stick with mine trains...Can't wait to meet thousands of ACErs at SFMM June 2002 - probably the ONLY time we'll get to see ACE folks puking and saying "ride X looks too intense for me." Ron Toomer would DEFINITELY not have ridden this baby.
Hey Guy's and Gal's:

Don't let the photos phool you. This thing is huge. I was there on Saturday and watched them complete one of the last three pieces of track. The first Raven turn has to be upwards of 150' in height. The small one may only be seventy-ish feet, but it pulls in tight, then rips right into another half barrel roll which seems to thread a needle between two immense supports. I can't see a 20ft wide car making that. But I can't wait to find out myself.

Oh, if you look real close on photos. You can see some serious trim brakes at the base of the dip after the first barrel roll leading into the "small" raven turn.

Speaking of which... Should it be called a raven turn since it seems to me to be an entirely different element in itself? Perhaps we can start a poll to re name it?

I'll be riding at Halloween Horror Nights!
