Wow...No Limits can look REALLY good.

Just built my new machine last week. (AthlonXP 1700+, 512MB DDR, GeForce 3), and WOW.  I can run NL at 1280x1024, full detail, with Quincunx full screen anti-aliasing and get about 30fps (minimum)  in the most complex coaster I have.  At 1024x768, I average 55fps with the QCFSAA on...and NL looks SO good with FSAA.  If you have the power, turn on the anti-aliasing...it makes the coasters look absolutely FANTASTIC.

That's the one reason I wish I had something more than a GeForce 2 MX. I've seen demos with these "3" cards and I'm blown away. Is it any surprise Microsoft tapped Nvidia for X-Box?

I have a pretty nice system as well (Athlon XP 1700+, GeForce 3 Ti200) and I run No Limits at 1024x768 with Quincunx anti-aliasing and full detail and get about 60 FPS.

Its definitely an improvement over my P3 450 and GeForce 2 ;)

Grumble..... I've only got a Riva TNT 16 meg, and an Athalon 850 Mhz. That thing really lags. I cannot afford an upgrade now either, I have to save money for my wedding. (October 12)

Side note, new computers make great wedding presents!

Your processor is more than adequate at the moment, and I think you'd find that a GeForce 3 would perform really well with that processor. An 850 Athlon can hang with a 1 GHz P-3 any day... you're in good hands!

As a side benefit, all of the Nvidia chips starting with the GeForce (maybe GeForce2) have benchmarked proportionally well with faster processors.

If I could get a little help here - what card would you reccommend for a lowly P3 - 650 (AMAZING how fast technology passes you by) with an Intel 810 (shudder) video card?

NL runs ok, but only at 640x480, and I get between 25-15 FPS. Thanks.

A GeForce2 MX can be had for around $50 bucks, I believe. It'll give you a little boost. It doesn't have to be one of the models with a ton of RAM, since NL isn't really texture intensive. Check http://www.pricewatch.com/ for the best deals (look under video cards).

Jeff - Just out of curiousity, what frame rate do you get with your GeForce2 MX?

30 to 100 depending on where the camera is "looking."

I feel so left behind, with my PII 250, and my choppy non-nolimits games.  But it was either that or a new motorcycle...the choice was not difficult. ;)
I am thinking of buying a card.  I don't have that much money, but I could barely scrape up enough to buy a 3.  SHould I go with it?  Also, are they hard to install and get working?  My mom doesn't want me to mess up the comp

The  cards are very easy to install. just follow the directions.

Beer, My Baby, and Coasters. Is this a great country or what? ;)
Cards generally are easy to install, follow the directions, and make sure you push it in the slot completely, but don't force it. If it doesn't fit in completely, it won't work, and you won't be able to boot, and if you force it, it breaks.
However, with my GeForce 3, we were having problems with it locking up even before Windows would boot. I just removed a RAM stick and it worked fine. Unfortunaly I have to use 128 megs less of RAM, now. If you have any problems with it, you can always look for newgroups. They help a lot, most of the time.

Hey Jeff just wait till the fourth Quarter Intel is gonna blow us all away with the new p4's, also A geforce 3 is now 200 something thanks to the Canadians. For the slow the canadians are ATI, since they brought out there 8900 and 8500 series big boys.  Also i think the geforce three will be about 100 something by then since they will be more ins tock.

Intel lags behind in per-clock benchmarks. I doubt they'll blow anyone away.
