Woodies with Steel Supports

Ive been on Great White in Wildwood NJ. They use steel support to keep it from corroding. It feels smoother than other wooden coasters. But it still has the same train movement and feel so theres no real difference.

Thanks p_c_r, I had seen the storm photos closing in on the park, but had not heard if there was any damage to park or coasters.

In response to p_c_r...

I hadn't heard that the Hurricane was hit by the waterspout.  I was down there the weekend it happened.  In fact, we drove "downtown" and looked at the damage right after the spouts ended.  The Swamp Fox was running and I think the Hurricane was running too.  The local news stations kept showing footage that somebody took from inside the park of the waterspout that was closest to the Pavilion.

Overall, I thought the Hurricane ran well over the course of the year.  That last jolt just kills the last helix for me, which is my favourite part of the ride.  The roughness in the first helix is there but not as noticeable as the last helix.  I actually heard one person go "OUCH" when the trains hit that spot.

I agree with you about the Hurricane crew.  Most of the time they seem uninterested and usually go off to stare over the rails at Ocean Blvd.  To me, what hurts the Pavilion, is this new admissions policy.  They need to go just to a straight one fee admission and can the all you can ride pass or the 5.00 gate fee.  It causes confusion at the entrance ticket booths and the ride entrances.  I've seen many empty trains go out on the Hurricane because of ticket problems at the top of the stairs.  That's one reason why you can't say on and reride the 'cane.  You have to go back around because of this policy.  (That's what one person told me.)  I developed Hurricane Hamstring because of all the stairclimbing :)

Jeff said:Sloppy track is what causes roughness. A well maintained wood coaster can be very smooth (see: Holiday World).

I know what you're saying, but why is Mean Streak so shaky then? CP takes good care of their rides, was MS just very poorly designed or constructed? And about the steel/wood supports, it doesn't really make a difference to me except in some cases. How stupid would Shivering Timbers look with steel supports? If it saves the parks money, and it saves thousands of trees, I guess steel supports are a good thing.

MS was very poorly built, CP retracks it all the time etc, its just liek so many other Dinn Summers woodies.  Some however are great, liek Texas Giant but most are mediocre at best.

Does CCI know how to make a bad coaster?
The waterspout didn't get it, LOL! The TV stations reported some debris may have hit, and I believe the inspection took place the next day. I emphasis NEXT day because I don't think they keep enough mechanics around to do anything involved! I went down there, and couldn't tell anything had even happened, they reported damage across the street. Anyways, steel structure, good for the area!

..and all those stairs, my legs hurt thinking about it. I begged the girl to just spin the turnie for me evry time I came through, and they wouldn't do it! There was nobody there, and the train would be waiting for us after our JOURNEY, we were their entertainment for the day. Admissions policy, a breeze, IF you designed it. It's something like, one person buys five tickets, and can take up to three(may be two) of their buddies in with them. Only, not even one person can do really anything with five tickets. $1 per ticket!. It's only that way to prevent loitering, and people changing in the bathrooms. The policy works well, for keeping people OUT!
