Wooden Roller Coasters

How does the wood on wooden coasters not begin rotting after time. I'm doing a Science Fair experiment on deck stains does any one know if they use any kind of stains.
I think the wood on newer CCI woodies is just pressure treated southern yellow pine. The older coasters were usually painted white, but I think they stopped that because the paint got nasty pretty quickly, and repainting the coasters was a ton of work. They also install new lumber every year to keep the coaster in good condition, at least in most cases. On older woodies like the ones at Kennywood, there isn't a single piece of wood on the supports and track that is original to when it was built, kinda interesting to consider that......
