Both Borough President Markowitz and Dick Zigun, the unofficial mayor of Coney Island say the observation wheel currently planned for Staten Island would be a fine addition to the amusement area, but operators of the 150-feet Wonder Wheel say the 92-year-old ride featured in the movie “The Warriors,” is and always should be a Coney Island original.

Regardless of whether an observation wheel is put in or not, the Wonder Wheel will still be a unique attraction at Coney Island that people will continue to ride. It's very unique even compared to a ferris wheel. I don't think there will be much overlap in the demographic for these 2 rides. I don't see there being any issue with them coexisting. Especially if the one is built on Staten Island.

That article brings up a couple of good points. One is that Brooklyn would cream any competition anyway, and I think he's right. Second is that it's not a competition in that the Staten Island wheel would be one of those calm capsule rides and the Wonder Wheel, with it's open air cages and rolling action, borders on thrill ride for many. I know I never went on Wonder Wheel for the view!

Plus, who goes to Staten Island anyway? They are the red headed step-child of the NYC boroughs :-)
