Gawd, I'm about to become my father, if my father understood the Internet...

... I'm with Pete. To quote a song from Bye Bye Birdie, "kids! What's the matter with kids today?"

Part of it is the Internet. Mocking, making fun of people, ridiculing people they don't know is ingrained in the culture now. If I can mock someone on Facebook, why can't I mock them in person? Part of it is that all too often kids are growing up in a world where they get awards for showing up, not for their accomplishments. Part of it is children raised by helicopter parents, whose precious snowflakes can do no wrong. Certainly there are many other factors in play.

Excuse me. I have to go find my walker and Geritol before I go yell at those damn kids on my lawn.

My buddies and I made fun of a pedophile who followed us around at the mall when we were young. -to his face on a regular basis. He almost cried when he figured out that we were onto him.

I can't think of us making fun of anyone else in public. We were kind of rowdy though.

I'm kind of surprised at how precious some of your childhoods were. I didn't roll with a bad crowd, and I was still involved in situations that were all "kids today."

And let's remember that this story isn't about the kids, it's about the adult who assaulted a child.

Back in my day, if an adult punched or choked an obnoxious kid, they would have been applauded. LOL

I envy you, Jeff. I didn't have a crowd to roll with. (As in, when we were supposed to break off in small groups for an assignment, I ended up with the teacher as my partner since no one wanted me on their team. (Not hyperbole.))

There aren't any winners in this story. The kids behaved terribly, and so did the adult.

That was my point, I rarely fit into any particular crowd, which may have been all the more reason I did stupid stuff when I did temporarily find myself inside of a tribe, if only to impress them.

I never had a crowd either but I had a best friend in a different school so I usually borrowed her crowd. We were quite proficient at landscaping creatively with quilted northern and I did saran wrap a few cars shut. Slipping away to "the bathroom" at Chi Chi's to tell the waiter it's your friend's birthday when it wasn't was always fun too. Other than that and not doing my homework I was pretty well behaved.

I didn't become my parents and don't intend to. They're lovely people, dont get me wrong, but I'll never become a parent, much less become my parents.

Similar to Fred Krueger, you became something much, much worse.

I'll take that as a compliment.
