Windows XP and RCT

OK, I know this is a long shot, but has anyone played RCT running Windows XP?

Ive never heard of windows Xp, but it will most likly work.  Programs usally dont work on lower versions of windows.

I recently tried playing RCT under Windows XP. For the most part, it runs fine with almost no problems or issues. But you will need to of course have the latest download patch to make it run properly. Because Windows XP uses the same core as Windows 2000 (which I run on all my machines but the XP tester), the latest patch resolves the Windows 2000 compatibility problem AND the Windows XP compatibility issue. You could also run RCT under compatibility mode, but I've found it to be a bit unstable and patching it resolved the issues. I think the patch I used was v.1.23. But once the patch is installed, all works great. Hope this helps.

Like Decoy said, works great once you install the patch, with the caveat that my sound is sometimes a bit glitchy (Creative Labs Live!)

XP will even pop up a warning dialog telling you that you should install the patch, if you try running RCT before doing so! Nice touch, although I hate to think how large that "compatibility database" must get ;)

Nevermind... I took the leap and it worked fine.

Just installed it works fine, but as for trainers and the like, good luck I couldn't get any to work.

Since you've already taken the leap, you know that RCT works just peachy with XP.  Also, in my experience with XP, every game I play works great.  I have an XP (RC2) / 98 dual boot setup...and I haven't booted to 98 in over a month.

I'm going to have to try and fire-up some older games that wouldn't work on Win2000. I still never played very far into Indiana Jones, and it wouldn't run under Win2000. Perhaps having XP run it in 98 mode will work.

The trainers should run under Win98 mode. I have RCT running on an Win XP (RC2) machine but the trainers run under the Win 98 mode. It was also how I got the trainers to function under Windows 2000. Incidentally, Windows 2000 does have a similar compatibility mode. It's just hidden on the CD-ROM. Look in the support directory for a program called APCOMPAT.EXE and it'll do the same as Win XP's compatibility mode. That's how I got my trainers to work in Win2000.
Another thing to note, SB Live! owners might want to tone down the acceleration levels to basic or even to off. That seems to eliminate the glitchy sound under both Win XP and Win2000.

Actually, amazingly enough, moving the Live! to another PCI slot fixed the problem.  Seems the Live is fussy about where on the bus it lives.  On my motherboard, PCI slot 3 yields perfect results -- no glitches, no noise, no breakups...

I'll have to note to try that out GregLeg. That might eliminate some of the issues I have with the Live! under Win2000. Thanks for the tip. :)

I will stay with Windows 98, I can't play my X Wing vs TIE Fighter on line under Windows FMe. So XP will probably be the same.

Not at all... XP is based on 2000 which is in turn based on NT. While not 100% crash-proof, it's damn near close. Generally if one program starts to give you crap you can close it out without bringing down the entire system.

XP also has a compatibility feature where you can right-click a program file and set it to think it's running under 95, 98, Me or 2000. Haven't tried it, but I hear it works pretty well.

Thanks Jeff, I am glad to know that Microsoft is still capiable of creating a worth while product. We all know that they can suck from time to time. Windows Fme is a perfect example of this. I will still be very leary of XP until I get to tear into it.

Win98 SE was great. Very stable. I don't know how they managed to mess up Me so badly. 2000 is outstanding and stable, while XP improves on that.

Now if I didn't have to deal with the hard drive that just died on Steph's machine life would be peachy.

Bummer.

ME was a rushed, marketing-driven release.  No offense to any marketing people out there, but from a developer's perspective these are always disasters-in-the-making.  Releasing for the sake of features without proper process results in problematic code.  In ME we now have a case study that Software Engineering classes worldwide should pick up on...

Yes Windows 98 SE, is the God of OS, in my opinion. I never had a chance to play with 2K, but I will wait until someone else gets it and test it.
Well, there's at least two users here (Jeff and myself) who are already running XP as part of the Preview program.  I'm very impressed so far -- this is one of Microsoft's better releases.  (Of course, I've preferred NT to 9x since the days of NT 3.51...)

I use Windows XP here in my office... it works fine with RCT along with NoLimits. I have Windows ME on my regular computer and it works fine but I don't know how many patches I installed... Out of all the the windows line I personally prefer Windows 2000(with Window 2000 Server installed) which I use to host all my clients(and my site). On all my five computer(one server) RCT and NoLimits worked on all the windows platforms(95,98, Me, NT, 2000, XP but a few I had to patch up a bit).

As part of the preview program, I have a Windows XP machine running at home. Unlike my twin Windows 2000 machines, it is not on my home network yet. Ever since I moved up to Windows 2000 from Windows 98/98SE, I haven't looked back. And what from what I can tell from Windows XP so far, I might just make the move up although it might be a bit expensive. The most surprising thing to me about XP compared to Windows 2000 was the compatibility. Looks like MS got that part right this time around. I still remember spending a couple of weeks getting most of my stuff to work with Windows 2000. In regards to RCT, the only problem I really had was getting my trainers to run, but that was solved with a quick run through compatibility mode to get them to think they were in Win98.
I agree with GregLeg about Win Me. It was rushed, and driven by marketing. Microsoft should have left the Win9x line at Windows 98. When I was still in software development, we used Windows ME as an example of what not to do as a matter of fact.
On a side note, although it took longer than expected, the "home" version of Windows 2000 is actually Windows XP. If you think back to before the Windows 2000 launch; originally, Windows 2000 was going to be the entire OS line for Microsoft. Then MS suddenly killed the "home" version of Windows 2000, that's sort of how we got Win Me.
Just a little note there. ;)
