The trains worked fine, the new over the shoulder restraints didn't... Supposedly they were too hard or something resulting in a lot of unpleasant rides. Texas Tornado was closed within 3 hours of opening day and hasn't been open since.

Schwarkopf coasters should NOT have OTSR's, EVER.  The guy gives us ALL this, and we repay his memory with OTSR's...an outrage!

Just goes to show, be careful what you wish for. When Thriller arrived in Texas, (I'll call it Thriller to avoid confusion with that other Texas Tornado, the Hopkins looper with the PTC train) it didn't take long for the complaints to start with the jack-in-the-box shoulder bars that were added to the ride while it was still in Germany, presumably after the Mindbender accident in Canada.
Anyway, an awful lot of people were hoping for more conventional shoulder bars on that ride. Schwarzkopf has been showing the "more conventional" shoulder bars for a few years now (I first saw them on a Doppel Looping car at an IAAPA show). I said back then that it looked bad. Last fall at IAAPA I saw the Thriller lead car and thought, "What are they thinking? That is going to hurt people!" Apparently that's exactly what happened.
Aren't shoulder bars obsolete now? I wonder if they will consider putting the lap bars back in for next year.

I hate to say "I told you so," but I'm afraid I did...
Exactly. Simple solution to the Texas Tornado problem. Intall lap bars.
The Thriller and WE Mindbender are sort of the same age. All pictures in books I've seen of Thriller show the Mindbender style restraints. I can't find a picture of it without OTSR. Since the WE accident, and the public opinion, I think he had to have OTSR at that point. Did Thriller ever have just lapbars?

Doppel Looping! Where did that end up? That's not the Olympic Looper is it?

It's sad, Thriller is THE one ride I would go the distance to ride. For it to be not up and running, is a complete disappointment. It stands there just like SBNO, it being one of the most famous rides in the world!

Is the ride going to open back up ?
They should open it up next season, because as of now, its raining 40 days and nights.
Thriller/Tornado received the accordion restraints when it was determined lap bars were not sufficient to keep riders from inadvertantly smacking support columns, etc.

Unfortunately, these restraints really hurt the collar bone, and enough complaints were raised that Astroworld decided to try something new.

The new OTSR's really sucked, rock hard and strategicly placed near the ear.  Even worse than the accordions, a real failure.

So, like Thunder River, we lost the ride for 2001.  Maybe they'll figure something out by 2002.

Is it a Fun Ride ?
