Why isn't there a Big themepark in New York City?

I'd say the reason is that, for most people, there's already more than enough unique things to do in NYC. Why go to Six Flags Big Apple, which, in the minds of some GP, is the same as all the other Six Flags, when you can see a Broadway show, go to Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Tiffany's and all those other things NYC tourists do?

I agree with Den, no one goes to New York to go to a theme park. They go to visit everything else they have to offer. Think about it, Statue of Liberty, Time Square, Broadway Shows, Empire State Building, there is so much there. Notice how CP is succesful, cause what else is there to do in Ohio(no offense to anybody). Ohio has the Rock and Roll hall of fame and that is all I can think of.

Not only that, but think about, with the amount of room to build a park in NY, you would have a very tiny park. And with the population that NY has, you try and fit that many people into a park that small. It just doesn't work. People would get sick of it.

And there already are some parks near NY. Some very succesful ones I might add.

Wellll.... RubberDucky.... there is PLENTY to do in Ohio, just as there is in every other state. It's just that not everyone knows about it like they know about the things to do in NYC. CP is successful because it's a world-class park, not because there's nothing else to do. The other Lake Erie islands near CP thrive with tourists and visitors, and there are no coasters there.

But I agree with your other points.

btw... Trivia Quiz.... Cedar Point draws more out-of-state tourists to Ohio than anything. But can anyone guess what's in second place? I'll give the answer in an hour....

either the Statue of Liberty or the WTC area.

Den:

I'll guess the state fair.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since that is all I know of in Ohio.

Well there is a waterpak in Long Island, it was on Top Ten Water parks, but I forgot the name

Den,

I'll guess the Monument to the World's First Concrete Pavement - Located in beautiful downtown Bellefontaine. ;)

Sure, there are plenty of things to do in NYC but you can pick any city and find a lot of things to do. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago all have big amusement parks and a number of other well-known attractions.

I think the main reason has already been established. There are already a number of parks within range of NYC.

Den, not from Ohio, but I gotta go with either the R-n-R Hall of Fame or the buzzards returning to Hinckley (sp?). Isn't there also a world-class Aquarium/Seaquarium in Cleveland?...(never been IN the city).

Good guesses, all, but the answer is:

Holmes County. Yep, Ohio's Amish country draws in millions every year to buy cheap furniture, eat piles of meat and potatoes at family-style restaurants, and smash into horse-drawn carriages from the back at 60mph.

Ravenguy: Ever been to the state fair? I live about 4 minutes from the fairgrounds, so I get out there occasionally. Never seen so many hicks in my life....

rollergator: I'm not sure about an aquarium in Cleveland, but the one in Cincinnati is a huge draw. Then again, it's actually in Newport, Ky., so I guess that wouldn't count.

I always thought that NYC was a theme park.
Not quite a theme park but certainly a carnival (with a lot of of freak shows). :)

I've never ben to the state fair, but I hear its one of the biggest in the country.

With a handful of parks less than 3hr drive, dont complain. My nearest park is 6hrs away.

There is. It's called Splish Splash, and was originally owned and operated by the same company that owns Adventureland in Farmingdale, NY. I am not positive, but I don't believe they still own it.

At any rate, Splish Splash isn't really anything to speak of in my mind. It's small, thought it does have some unique slides. Also, it's at least a 2 hour drive from Manhattan, if not a bit more, so I would place it into the same category as lots of other parks (SFGAdv, Dorney, Lake Compounce, Rye, Jersey Shore).

Adventureland is a bit closer, and isn't too bad considering it's only 10 acres. The were rumors of new Top Scan this season, but I haven't been able to drive out there recently to check on them. Maybe today or tomorrow.

Over the years there have been several amusement parks in the NYC area. The first theme park was Freedomland and it died a merciful death. There was a large park called Fort George Amusement Park in NYC overlooking the Harlem River. It burned in 1914 and was never rebuilt. There is still a park there but without the amusements. There is also Playland in Rye, NY that has been in operation since 1928. It has 50+ rides and was the countries first totally planned amusement park.

Well **** **** ****! This certainly shows my age on these forums :-). I think it would be cool to have an inner city park, akin to Knotts or Disney in NYC. There is Coney Island, but its its so ghetto fab that many shy away from it. It would be cool for the owners to restore it to what it was in the past.

Fate is the path of least resistance.

Half of Cincinnati is in Kentucky.
Too bad Freedomland was such a failure.
