Why do some people get afraid of Roller Coasters?

People are afraid of Lap Bars! They just cant understand how they dont fall out. I mean this is what some say. "Theres no way Im going on The Raging Bull, It doesnt have a over the head thingy, Just a lap-a-ma-Bob. :)

I was just thinking that its probably because they don't know if they could take the intensity or whatever else of the ride. They think its too crazy for them.

Personally, I'm not afraid of coasters, it's heights I'm afraid of. I know once I'm past the lift and first drop, I'm fine. It's that whole thing of being way the heck up there that bothers me. After the first ride though, I'm over it, and will get right back on.

There is only one coaster I'm afraid of, and this will sound silly to yall, but it's the Loch Ness Monster at BGW. And the sillier part is why. I once had a dream about falling out of it going into the first loop, and the next time I rode it I got stuck on the lift for like 15 minutes. I was s***** bricks, and white knuckled by the time I got off. Never again I said. ( Yes, I'm very superstitious.) But, this year, with enough courage (and beer), I shall once again go on that coaster. If I get stuck again though, that's it. I shall take it as an omen.

As far as other people being scared, I think they think coasters are unsafe. My mother is scared to death to ride, although I've convinced her to ride BBW this year. A lot of my friends are scared to ride. They all say, " You ain't gettin me on that. You could kill yourself if ya fell out." I always try to reason by saying , yeah, but how often does that really happen? The odds have got to be like one in a billion.

(And yes, I know I kinda contradicted myself there!!)

Enjoy yourself. These are the good old days you're going to miss in the years ahead.

Well, think about what you're doing when you're riding a coaster.

You're getting into a heavy piece of machinery. You're climbing a fairly big hill (in some cases, really big). Then you fall a great distance at a high speed. Then you twist, turn and flip your way back to the exact same place you started. When I say it like that, it doesn't sound like the smartest idea, but then I remember how fun it is :)

Also, I think a lot of people really hate that "tummy" feeling that comes with airtime. I know my mom does not like it at all, and won't ride most coasters. We managed to get her on Rock 'n' Rollercoaster, and she hated the launch, but loved the rest of the ride, simply because that is the only part of the ride you get that feeling, (oddly enough, she also liked Tower of Terror).

I guess it depends on the person.

I believe with all the accidents the media shows. If there ever is one

I believe some people get scared because they think they'll fall out, or the coaster is goint to fall down. At least that does for some of my friends...

People get afraid of coasters mainly before they ride the first one. Before they ride their first one, they don't know how great the feeling is, all they know is all the accidents that have happened. It is just the though of being 100 ft up in the air and going to the ground a 55mph that doesn;t seem to appealing, this was my problem. But I got over it and have loved coasters ever since.

The only time a had fear at an amusement park was not even on a coaster. The First time I rode Power Tower at Cedar Point (S&S) I rode the drop side. We were held at the top longer then normal. For some reason I had a bit of fear run through me. I clutched the OTSR until the drop. As soon as we were falling I was fine. Only being stuck at the top was I affected.

This has never happened before or since.
