Why Do people put arms up?

Perhaps to feel more free?

"Try putting your hands up on Hypersonic. Wow!"
I did, just not during the launch. Once we got going vertical, it was all hands up from there. I did, however, watch one guy with his hands up during the launch. His arms were forced back so far that I wouldn't be surprised it he dislocated something.

Anyway, about riding with hands up, I do it for a couple of reason:
1) You surrender to the machine
2) You float better
3) You can't tense up your muscles if you aren't holding on
4) To impress whoever I'm riding with ;)

I agree with you Z-Man..

One different thought....My wife is (was) terrified of coasters. We just recently went to Nagashima and rode all their coasters. We started on White Cyclone, a woodie, and I raised my arms. She asked me why I do that. I said "because it involves trust in God and the coaster builders. Plus I like to feel vulnerable. It makes the ride more thrilling."
She looks at me with a strange "whatever..."
Later in the day, we rode the Steel Dragon.
Halfway down the big hill, she is screaming like a madman, and I grab her hands, and hold them in mine. She looks at me, and suddenly realizes that this is FUN. She does it on her own...!
She ends up begging me to go again, and holds her hands up the entire ride...she doesn't drop them once! I ask her why SHE likes holding her hands up? She says because the ride loses its intensity, and just becomes enjoyable. She always felt like she had a deathgrip on the lapbars, but with her hands up, she felt free. She was ENJOYING herself! AMEN TO THAT!

I agree with compressed airhead about how you surrender to the machine- your telling it I am not scared of you! I think you get more airtime, you feel free. I like the feel of the g's on my arms, it is sometimes a struggle to keep them up. The helixes on Titan do a heck of a job on the g's, I have to struggle to keep them up, it is fun! Mr. Freeze to, even though it is hard to get them over ostr's! I love coming out of the tunnel doing 70mph and you got those hands up- not any easy task:)

TITAN CRAZED!!
I held my arms up on the FoF launch, and will never do it again...It hurt really bad...
I actually enjoyed the FoF launch with my hands up. I also did it (as much as OTSRs allow) on Volcano. Hypersonic is another story...

I am 6' 4", and I am have long arms, so I don't put my arms up. I just keep my hands up, it looks like I am a 7-11 clerk getting held up on the on ride photos. I used to put my arms as high as I could until about 15 years ago. I smacked my hand on a board on the Giant Dipper at SCBB. Ouch!

I always keep my hands up for all coasters (well, not while going up long chain lifts) and haven't felt the need to grab them, except for a brief moment the first time I rode Stealth and it flips over. Vekoma Flying Dutchmans are the only coaster I feel safe putting my arms up since they aren't going to hit anything! I wonder how close the choppers will be on X? *** This post was edited by djansi on 8/2/2001. ***
Why not? i dont know where else i would put them, i mean it would just feel so musch different it u couldnt put ur hands up at all. Its just enhances(sp) the ride experience
I only put my hands up on certain coasters to enhance the experience. On Nitro @ SFGAdv, if you put your hands up it adds to the experience b/c you truly feel as if you might fall out. On hypers you should put your hands up b/c it adds a rush. If the coaster is slower, though, it is sort of pointless.

I agree, I think it enhances the experience, and I like the "putting yourself in the hands of the coaster" idea. I never hold on, and I don't brace my legs either (on coasters where that applies). The only exception would be if a ride was really rough (Mean Streak, for example) and I'd rather not have as bad a headache. But it's all part of the experience!

Holding on never did anything for me but make rides rougher. If you just sit there and not hold on or put your hands up, you do not feel the vibration that starts to suck. As for that Hypersonic comment, I saw plenty of people throw the hands up at the last second, and there wasn't this flying backwards of the arms. Those guys loading you in will tell you it will rip your arms off or at least hurt really bad, but nobody that threw their hands up felt anything. I'm here to tell you it didn't hurt and I'm a small guy:).

I find it strange that people find it odd or have to question the hands up thing. People have always put hands up, look ma no hands, who cares what started it, it happens, I do it, many others do it. I cannot ride without throwing my hands up, it's a natural reaction. To look cool? To be brave? No, I put my hands up for the same reason I ride the coasters in the first place, fun.
well, the first time i tried to put my arms up was on the first drop on beast, and i quickly brought them back down because i thought i was going to hit the concrete. when i ride, i don't put my arms up, but i don't hold on for dear life either. (on vortex, i go with raised arms. it's really cool esp. through the corkscrews.)

Vortex rules!!!! (still)
your just letting the coaster do what it wants to do with your body. when you have your hands down holding on to something then you are not allowing your body to experience the full motions of the roller coaster.
Putting your arms up tricks your brain into thinking that no holding on=unsecured.

I love the hands-up feel to the ride. I agree with practically everyone. It makes a ride more thrilling and lets the coaster put you where it wants you. Also, I was a little freaked at the top on Millennium but got them up the second time...and that is one of the best times to put your hands up, especially when your in the back. You get some airtime and feel like your going to roll out of the coaster...
I don't put my hands up on certain coasters (SFMW's medusa for one) because they pull my arms back and it hurts. But on hyper coasters I do.

I only keep my hands down on most looping coasters with OTSR's since it's a little hard to put my hands up with those darn things on.

I often say that the handshake for the American Coaster Enthusiasts should be putting your hands up. You walk up to fellow ACEer and then throw your arms up. Heh, I don't even remember the last time I haven't put my arms up...

The only ride I've never had my arms up through the whole thing was MF. I held on during the first drop, but after that, they went up!

I always put my arms up except on inverts, then i just don't hold on. I like it better. On things like Apollo's Chariot, when you keep your hands up and your bar loose it is the best feeling. When you have your hands down it pulls down the bar. It just feels more scary or something. I just like it better. Like you could fly out. The best examples are MF and Raging Bull, it really feels like you are being pulled out on the drop, only with your hands up though. Sometimes it can be a challenge like on the helix on Goliath. I just do it cause it is better.
